You can't be more blown away than I am right now. For fans of this band, you've got to get a piece of this tour if they are passing anywhere near you.

I went with a very accomplished drummer friend of mine named Dave and we both about ran out of superlatives. Dave at one point said, "I'm trying to count this sh*t. I can't", shaking his head in disbelief. Who can really keep up with these guys? People, I've seen Al DiMeola MANY times and I can't ever remember him ripping it like he did last night, and on both acoustic and electric guitar. I mean, he's ALWAYS good, but JESUS!!! Maybe only one person could follow an Al DiMeola solo, and that's Chick Corea. And follow it he did, to just as many dropped jaws. Corea often played three or four different electric keyboards on the same tune. From the sounds he was getting, I believe one or two of them may be the same he was using in the 70's. Stanley Clarke and Lenny White were every bit as phenomenal, especially Clarke. He did a solo on standup acoustic bass (OK, cello) where you thought he was going to rip the strings right off of the instrument.

I don't really know what else to say, other than GO SEE THIS BAND. I never saw them in the 70's, but still, I feel qualified after last night to say that they are truly better than ever. Age has not played a factor at all here. And oh, by the way, NO sheet music was used.............everything was played from memory. Only a 1 hour, 15 minute set, but more notes therein than most 2-1/2 hour shows. (They had another, second show tonight after the one I saw). And in case you're wondering.................they played most of Romantic Warrior, at the end of the show. It was BETTER than the record.

Sounds great Rob glad you got to see them . I was out of town during the week when they came to Dallas. Sure hated to miss them. By chance a live CD coming out from this tour anybody know ?

Rob...sounds just like I expected the reviews to sound! I have tickets for the final show of their tour here in NYC..first week of Aug. I can't wait! I have been touting their return since i heard they were coming back.
Your review has gotten me more juiced than before.
1hr 15 mins? A little short, but if it is anything like you say it is, it will be plenty!

Thanks for the review Rob. Boy that is a short show though. I never saw RTF in the 70's, but this tour looked like a must do, and I have tix for 8-2 in Atlanta at the new Cobb Energy Center. Looking forward to it!

Hopefully for some of you guys they are not stacking shows two in one night as they did in SF. Oh well, I guess that enabled more people to see them. However, even at one hour fifteen minutes, after witnessing the unbelievable intensity of their show, I did not walk away dissapointed, not in the least. That's hard to understand unless you're there. I'll take exceptional quality like this over quantity in minutes, any time.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show! An all-star band if there ever was one, no doubt.

As much as I like a marathon show, I hear what you're saying about quality over quantity. I've seen plenty of 60-90 minute Aquarium Rescue Unit sets that had more power and energy than some 4 hour Grateful Dead shows.

I've got goosebumps, Rob! I saw this band back in the 70's and all of the members in other bands along the way and you pretty much described exactly what I experienced in that concert hall. Was very disappointed when the dates were announced for these shows as all dates in my area conflicted with a previously scheduled vacation. So, thanks much for your great review - I'll have to live vicariously on this one.

Well, robslob had me expecting a short show....they played an hour, took a 1/2 hour break, and played another hour and 20 minutes.

The second set started with Al doing an acoustic guitar solo No Mystery - then they played Romantic Warrior - with Stanley Clarke on a standup bass. He played it the entire 2nd set until the last couple of songs. He did a 10 minute bass solo on the standup that was phenomenal...

They all stretched out and had solos the 2nd half. I was in the balcony with a perfect view - and as usual when I am in the balcony I focus on the drummer. Lenny was amazing to watch.

They had some technical problems the first half - Chick kept having problems, and then they had to replace the head on Al's amp. All of the people on stage trying to fix things was a little distracting.....

You should catch this show if it comes around......and I must say, it was a very interesting crowd...
