Seems to me that the whole after life idea was made up because as an "evolved" being,
annihilation is too scary.

Is there an after life or is this just it?

Did I spend all this time under a strict catholic regime only to
find out that i really could have partied with no repercussions
because there ain't any?

I find too many people do things because, well, after I die
I got a spot in heaven, or 70 some virgins at my beck and call.

Would this change anything if you KNEW for sure?
Since we don't, I guess we just deal with the card that are dealt and
go from there, eh?

One hopes something better awaits. Personally, I hope there aren't any virgins waiting for me. Who wants to deal with one let alone 70?

I would think you can party with no repercussions anyway as long as you aren't hurting anyone. The main thing to me is to live ethically. Without this I would have no family, true friends or self-respect.

Aint but one way out...and that is to accept Jesus Christ as your savior. John 3:16.
Ask forgiveness for your sins and believe. 10 comandments. Golden rule.
There is a heaven and a hell. The devil is real and wants to destroy your life.

Totally. Live ethically. The rest will fall into place if you live right

I am probably getting it wrong, but I saw a bumper sticker one time that read something like :

What if you think there is no heaven...and you're wrong?

Jesus believed that there was an afterlife and spoke of heaven as an actual place that he, God and believers would live.

One criminal scoffed Jesus. "But the other criminal protested, 'Don't you fear God even when you are dying?' 'We deserve to die for our evil deeds, but this man hasn't done anything wrong.' Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.' And Jesus replied, 'I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.' Luke 23:40-43 New Living Translation.

John 14.
1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 4 “And you know the way where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

I have been asked how I know there is a Heaven, how I can believe in something that can't be seen or touched. I simply tell them, "That's what faith is. Believing but not seeing." Then I go on and tell them, "I'd rather risk eternity believing, than to not have believed and then find out I was wrong. Eternity is a LONG time." That doesn't mean that I understand everything. I hope to be enlightened by *The Man* one day, myself.

Plus, I have a friend in church who had a near death experience and he told me in great detail what he went through before he "came back." It was pretty convincing....the Great Light, the feeling of total peace. I WANT that for myself one day.

As far as Heaven and Hell go......

I always say there is only one way to know for sure.....

When you die.......

and your not going to be coming back to tell the answer........

HEY! Are you a Todd Snider fan?? I just rediscovered this guy and picked up his album East Nashville Skyline last week. Enjoy Yourself is the last tune on the CD and I can't help but keep playing it over and over. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, please disregard

I think you got it close there Vince but it should be because I can see them...

If you don't have the personal satisfaction of salvation, it is very comfortable to have faith.
For all I know this may be heaven or hell, and all the dejavu is produced by my past lifes, but I chalk it up to the repetitive nature of facility maintenance.

Although there is no proof of an afterlife.I personally believe there is a better place afterwards and a dark place for the wicked!

Someone once asked me, "what are your chances of going to Heaven"?

I replied "100%".

The lesson being, if you believe, the answer is always 100%.

The question is, how would you have answered?

Here is what Ronnie James Dio has to say:

Heaven and Hell

Sing me a song, youre a singer
Do me a wrong, youre a bringer of evil
The devil is never a maker
The less that you give, youre a taker
So its on and on and on, its heaven and hell, oh well

The lover of lifes not a sinner
The ending is just a beginner
The closer you get to the meaning
The sooner youll know that youre dreaming
So its on and on and on, oh its on and on and on
It goes on and on and on, heaven and hell
I can tell, fool, fool!

Well if it seems to be real, its illusion
For every moment of truth, theres confusion in life
Love can be seen as the answer, but nobody bleeds for the dancer
And its on and on, on and on and on....

They say that lifes a carousel
Spinning fast, youve got to ride it well
The world is full of kings and queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
Its heaven and hell, oh well
And theyll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
Its heaven and hell, oh no!
Fool, fool!
Youve got to bleed for the dancer!
Fool, fool!
Look for the answer!
Fool, fool, fool!

This is awesome discussion! With some awsome replies.

Living ethically is a good and important thing. But as it has already been said there is only one way and Living ethically isn't it. The most published, printed, translated and read book in human history says,

Rom. 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

Ephesions 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved. Through faith and not that of yourselves. It is the gift of God; not works lest any man boast.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said. "Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of heaven"

Living right is what our savior wants us to do and we should do that not in hopes of getting into heaven but because we love him. He gave his life to pay for our sins so that we may see the kingdom of heaven. And eternity is not just a long time it's forever man. The alternative to heaven is not appealing at all. I not only believe this but I know it to be true. No I haven't seen it but I have seen what he has done for me, and that is more than enough.

It's more comforting to imagine there's some sort of afterlife than absolute nothingness. Religion is important for controlling folk to stick together for the common good. The simiilarity in human religions is interesting.

In a way, this is kind of what I had in mind yet failed to articulate.

On an unrelated/related matter, for all the bible quotes and someone
asking where this came from after my Mustard post,

Well, isn't there a bible lesson about the mustard seed in there?

Hell of a discussion either way ...
