i'm listening to Jessica off of Wipe the Windows...

Man, this is a killer version, high tempo, chuck going crazy, dickey improvising most of the solo.

Jessica is my favorite instrumental by the brothers. so joyful, can't help but smile and dance.

porkchopbob had a great post talking about the evolution of AWTNM. i think that the same can be true for this song. every lineup treated it a different way. and i'm really partial to the jazzfest 2007 version right now. everyone just clicks on this version.

any other favorite versions of jessica?

I do love the versions Warren and Dickey did in the mid-90s, but without a piano part it's a different animal (it was even nice when Mike Lawler added some tasty piano licks to it on the 1981 tour). Warren's solo came in where Chuck's signature piano part would normally enter, taking the song in a different (yet still wonderful) direction. It was a great way of updating a song, adapting it for the lineup, without reworking it entirely - I mean, with that melody, why would you rework it? How could you?

But still, that piano part is almost as much of a signature for the song as Dickey's melody is. I think I will always prefer the studio version off of Brothers & Sisters - it's so iconic - though the Nassau Archive has a very tasty version, too. I sure keep hearing a lot about this Jazz Fest 2007, maybe I'll have to pick it up.

I'm a little partial to Dickey's versions these days.

But the WTW's version is nice.

My favorite ABB tune, and I named my first daughter Jessica for that very reason. She just turned 17 and is driving....I remember the night she was born after seeing her the first time at the hospital and driving home blasting "Jessica" on the car stereo......any version of this song always makes me smile

WTW is one of the most underrated ABB albums ever. It's no AFE, but it's still damn good music.

The Dixie Dregs did a nice version on the California Screamin' album which also features a killer version of Peaches En Regalia (w/ Dweezil sitting in).
Always thought Steve Morse would make for a very neat guest appearance w/ the brothers.

@ the Roxy in may of '77. Dickey and Great Southern. Perhaps Dan Toler's finest moment.

Beautiful

I would love to have Wipe the windows. It is out of print so I probably never will. Gregg's 1974 Tour is also out of print so I will never have that one either. Really makes me sad.

The Jazzfest 2007 is one of the best things this line up has ever done.

Also think these are excellent:

Paris 91
Tivoli Beer Center, CO 94
Merriwether 91
Pine Knob 96

Many great versions but Jessica needs piano; especially Chuck's piano. My dad, a classical music fan, loves this song. Many similarities.

The WTW version is my favorite. It is so powerful. I love how Gregg's organ is really out front. Listen to the point of the start of Dickey's solo. With the B3 and the crowd going nuts it has to be one of my favorite points in music. The drummers go nuts and the whole band just never sounded better. Hard to believe it was from 1976 when things were heading downhill.

PS: Get the remastered version and listen loud on a quality system. Makes the world of difference.

Another one of the "greatest live albums of all time"!

Typically, I argue that "Jessica" is like "Layla" - you just have to have that piano part! The current line-up does a fine job (sans piano), but that song is as much Chuck's as it is Dickey's.

Steve Morse just takes the solo to another part of the universe!
