Without going too much into detail, the time has come to push away the booze.
I will attend my first AA meeting Saturday morning and am scared as hell.
Any words of reassurance from you fine folks would really help at this time.

Good luck, goldtopper! And re: being scared as he** ... well, you are taking a first important step ... that's always a somewhat scary thing. Not a 12 stepper myself but I have been involved in the program with others and know some people who would credit AA with saving their lives. Will be keeping you in my thoughts.

Peace to You goldtopper, You can do it. I have a very dear family member who over indulged in alcohol for 35 yrs. Sought help thru the 12 steps after being hospitalized and nearly dying. He is 5+ yrs. sober now and is healthy, no permanent liver damage. I have his 1 yr. coin and it means the world to me. Thoughts are with You....joe

It's perfectly natural to feel fear of any situation you've never been in before. But there's nothing to be afraid of - just be sure and let them know it's your first meeting (they will most likely ask at the beginning of the meeting if there are any newcomers). You don't even have to give your name if you feel uncomfortable about it....take my word for it, you'll be in good hands.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

There is nothing to be scared of. If you know somebody who attends AA meetings regularly, have said person bring you to the meeting. Understand, everyone in that room feels the same as you about drinking right now, or had the same thoughts you are having today about wanting to stop boozing. It can be done and I think perhaps you will find a few ABB fans in attendance too.
All the best on your upcoming journey.
Peace!

I've been involved in 12 step recovery for the last twelve years....did have a relapse about 3 years ago 0r so, but quickly got back nvolved. Before my first meeting I thought I was gonna puke, I was so scared and nervous. That lasted about 6 months for me, becuase recovery meant changing everything about the way I thought and acted, and it took a while before I started feeling comfortable with the idea of not drinking or using again and dealing with things as they are rather than how i wanted them to be. I was convinced my life would be over, I would become a total bore and hang around boring people, and I would never have any fun again. Just the opposite turned out to be true. Best of luck to you, If there is anything I can do, info I can give you, anything, just PM me.

I am a 12 Stepper, and thank you Doug for being open you are the first poster to to say your in the program. I am a proud 12 Stepper and that first step is the hardest. But if you can admit (Step 1) that is the hardest and most humbling moment. You will make it if you choose too. It still comes to you, bottom line, you have too really want too. I used to say I can do this. I have willpower, and this lady in the meeting who became my temporary sponser, was on the phone with me a few days later. I used my willpower saying again and she just had this roaring laugh. I was hurt, why was she laughing. The answer is not willpower, but faith, and friends, and looking at the whole picture. You hang in there, we are all different, and so is the way we attain our sobriety. Oh I talk alot, so as we say in AA, take the info you need and leave the rest. Hil

Goldtopper, while not a 12 stepper myself, I am almost 13 years sober. Let me assure you ... DON'T be worried that your life without alcohol or your drinking buddies won't be as fun. That is a lie. Things run on a much more even keel and there is a freedom like you have never experienced when you are enslaved to substance abuse. Good luck and God bless!

Charles, I swear you just stole this post right out of my head !
21 years sober and counting here.
Goldtopper, what Charles said.
I think it was Linnie that gave those of us that have dealt with or are dealing with addictions the name "Enlightened Rogues" in a thread similar to this one time and I think it's a very fitting handle.
All the best to you on your journey and good vibes from my house to yours.

As Meatloaf said , You took the words right out of my mouth. Perfectly stated. I was scared to death, how would I function, how would I fish, how do you go out on a boat without ETOH. I will not be Hilarious Hilarie anymore. And I don't want to drink cofee 24 hours a day. We can be your buds on the net. Good luck tomorrow, we're here for you.

Well I went to AA as part of my recovery after going through a program. I went for about a year and then just quit going. I'm not better than the program by any means, I was just able to continue on. Come January 09 I will have 23 years.

My best to you and do go and go often. The first year is the hardest yet it's never easy. You won't be boring and your body will certainly appreciate it.

My best to you and if you ever need advice or encouragement or have questions it you can e-mail me and I'm sure others, call friends in the program and most definitely your sponsor.

Goldtopper, go meet new people and remember just one thing today, we have all had a first meeting and all felt the same. The folks at the meeting are well aware of how a new person at their 1st meeting feels and will welcome you.
I congratulate you on thinking you need another way of life and searching out the people who can assist in that journey. Hilarie

Hey brother. Not a 12 stepper but you have my full support. Taking that first step is a very brave start.

You will make it...
