Never saw Dickey with Vassar Clemens. Had to pop the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will The Circle Be Unbroken into my CD Player after this one.

No doubt - great video ... thanks for sharing emr. Sue - believe smelling salts (and definitely a cold towel ) should be included when showing this to Rainy.

Dickie tore it up, alright. That feller on the roundback wasn't too shabby either!

Oh Vassar! What a fine clip here indeed! A quick story about Vassar. He was the nicest man I have met in a long time in 2002 at the SOSMP. He told me "what are you looking at "when I was staring him down backstage. I told him a legend. He told me no I am not just a man.

My buddy who played in local Jacksonville bands knew him well. Vassar said his back was hurting. My buddy gave him a loratab. Vassar came back after a set and said " Man I am going to have to get my doctor to get me some of them. This is the best I have felt in years"

For you that met Vassar will know why Sunday at Magfest and Springfest is always "Vassar Day"

God bless his soul!

I talked to John McEuen (of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band playing banjo in the clip) earlier today, trying to see if he remembered who the steel guitar player was in the back. I was guessing either John Hughey, who played on Dickey's "Highway Call" album during that time period, or the great Doug Jernigan. John thinks says it was Jernigan, a hell of a player - "probably Doug, Vassar's favorite and long time friend."

The other flatpick guitarist, Dave Salyer, played for a long time with Barbra Mandrell, and he has written many hit country songs. Dave played on Vassar's "Hillbilly Jazz Rides Again" album, which also features Doug Jernigan on the steel. These days Salyer does a kind of traveling Branson-type concert deal called the Dave and Daphne Show. He does have a bluegrass background, of course, with the IBMA Hall of Honor member Jesse McReynolds, of Jim and Jesse fame, who is his uncle.

Very cool clip. Dickey grew up in a string music playing family. Flatpicking is not easy. I miss Vassar a lot, but am glad I got to know him a little and to share some beyond-the-grave John Hartford-induced music history with him before he died. A prince of a guy and a hell of a talented and open-minded musician.

I would also strongly suggest a DVD project by John McEuen to check out - "The Dillards -A Night In The Ozarks." The Dillards have been around forever. many of you will remember them as the back woods, bluegrass-picking family - the Darlings - from the Andy Griffith Show. Here, McEuen produced and directed this video, featuring the Dillards playing live with family and friends, in and around the ole home place in Missouri, about 12 years ago. It is just now seeing the light of day, and it is a gem of a DVD.
