I just hope Butch reads this. I just want to say that I appreciate the meaningful comments and interviews that he gives. I truly believe that Butch Trucks is quite obviously the most intelligent member of the band and perhaps the only founding member who still possesses a real feel for the original spirit of the Allman Brothers. I don't mean to dis anybody here--I don't take sides in the controversies (I love you all equally), but It is quite refreshing to read an interview where one of teh members discusses the performances as "spiritual experiences." A great many fans feel this way and its exciting to think that the performers are feeling the same vibe that we are, rather than just going through the motions. When Gregg is asked, "What is the most memorable thing about the Beacon shows for you?" and he says "the cold weather," its a tremendous letdown for the fans who thought they experienced a little piece of heaven during the performance. At any rate, keep it up Butch and I'll maintain my everpresent admiration for your insight and genius.

I think gregg was just being humurous. It is much harder to realize humor when read than spoken. I think Butch is much more candid about his experiance at the shows than any ofthe other members. I get jazzed by his cool comments, but I think they all feel it, but may not say it so openly. Why would Gregg keep the band going, keep heading up to NY in the cold, and playing if he didn't ejoy at his age. I don't think he needs the $$$ at this point. I can see how one could be a fan of these comments, and it is a good point to disagree on. I am a Big flag waver for Gregg Allman, I think he is far more intelligent than anybody gives him credit for. Listen to his lyrics, all the meaning is right there. Butch doesn't write lyrics, so he has much more to say about his music.

Butch and Gregg are both very cool with their outlooks on life. It's no wonder why Gregg doesn't like interviews, when a joke gets him put off as shallow. Reading a recent one, he is very candid about what goes through his mind while playing. But that brings me to my question for/about Butch. Words come to him so easily and with such sincerity, so why not write lyrics?

Believe me when I tell you Gregg is having a ball with the band right now. The word from him and the people around him is that he's loving the music and the people in it more than ever. The Beacon run especially. I think the comment about the cold weather was an attempt at humor. Gregg does not always express his feelings openly. I know he's feeling it tho. I was there.

And, believe me, I do wish I could write lyrics. I have tried. There is a big difference between prose and poetry.

Butch are you really an existentialist? If so, who are some of your favorites? Kierkegaard?...

I think I've been a bit misunderstood here. I wasn't trying to denigrate Gregg, just to point out how much I like Butch. I've read a recent interview with Gregg that I loved and I think that the key is just that interviewers must ask intelligent questions of him to get intelligent responses. Regarding Butch as an existentialist, i was referring to his post on the Allman Brothers as a religion, which I thought an excellent piece of writing to come out of an internet post. I've ran it off and made copies for my friends. Sorry Butch, you may consider that theft or plaigarism.

Michael I think that Gregg sometimes just doesn't have much to say about a particular thing or he says something simple, but from his music we know he is a deep, intelligent and sensitive person; at least I always thought so; it's just sometimes what he says and the way he says it people form an opinion of him that may not be completely accurate of all that he is as a person. I remember him saying "life is like a **** sandwich, the more bread you have the less **** you have to eat", and "meat and taters rock and roll", from those things, one might conclude he was an angry redneck, which I don't think is true. That's why Gregg doesn't talk much, people tend to label him and misjudge him. I think he wants to live simply and people misinterpret that.

WOW, folks the system now edits out curse words, we don't have to. The edited word started with an s and had 4 letters so you can figure it out.

Gina,
I agree with you totally, not just on this issue, but on your other posts as well. Apparently, you're all over the forum all the time. I never meant to imply that Gregg Allman is either dumb or redneck. Quite obviously, a dumb redneck couldn't compose a song as complex as "Queen of Hearts" or "Desdemona" (a reference to Shakespeare's Othello). I love Gregg. I guess what I've been trying to say, and I hope that Butch reads this too, is that his posting on the Allman Brothers as a religion struck a chord (hit a note) with me and I used the comment by Gregg to demonstrate how apt Butch's statement is in comparison. I certainly don't deny Gregg's ability, talent, or sentimentality (Multicolored Lady, Please Call Home).

The reason why I became so defensive about Gregg with regard to this this thread was because it seemed like another slight on him. Gregg I think is one of the worst cast, misunderstood, and picked on rock and roll stars. The sensitive intelligent side of him rarely has shone through in the way mass media has cast him, and I worry when I see fans getting on him as well. But I see your point, and I am glad you picked up on this with Butch as well. The music wouldn't be great without all of thier good vibes...
