Mr. Van Morrison??? I just picked up the new one, "Keep it Simple". Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those HUGE Morrison devotees. A lot of his music over the years has been a bit mellow for my taste. The last record I picked up by him was "The Healing Game" (1997, and another GREAT one). But there is NO ONE in popular music who I am as much in awe of as I am Van Morrison. I mean, I remember rocking out to "Gloria" and "Mystic Eyes" by Them when I was 10 years old. Here I am 53 and the great records are still coming out of him. Back to "Keep It Simple": It may stack up alongside the all-time great Van records for pure soulfulness. Man, this is great stuff. May you keep it going for another 30 years, Van!!! I guess when you are immortalized by ABB, which has been doing "And It Stoned Me" and "Into The Mystic" for the last few years, well, that pretty much says it all, doesn't it?

I don't know...Jackson Browne is pretty close.
I love Van, he has quite a large catalog to choose from!

Van is a legend--consistent,varied & a superb musician who can handle any genre of music....
Dylan imho is the king of kings of singer/songwriter.
The Band wrote & performed outstanding music with historcal kyrics.
Lennon/McCartney,Harrison--i think so--solo work has more singer/songwriter emphasis & the Anthology albums 1-3 all contain out takes & alt versions that are well worth hearing(e.g.Harrison solo accoustic doing "while My Guitar Gently Weeps"...
Jackson Browne,Warren Zevon,Neil Young(& the individua; members of CSN),Joni Mitchell,Carole King,James Taylor & yes,Gregg Allman!!!

lots of greats

Well, there is our own Greg, Dickey, then there is Julie Miller, Steve Lauderdale, and way to many to name....without the song writers there, well there would be no songs to sing, and it would be a very sad world.

Thing about Van is that he is still coming up with classics. Not always full albums of classics, but at least a few incredible tunes on each album. Not many legacy artists can still put out the quality and quantity he does. I'll go get the new one.
