I can't believe we got to see Steve Winwood in a 600 seat theater! We arrived about 25 minutes before the doors opened and although we had seats, the line was short and we could have been within two people from the stage. The Blender is a small venue, very nice, and I would readily go again. It's in an OK neighborhood with plenty of restaurants and easy on-street parking.

The show was wonderful. The band was just Winwood, a flute/Sax player, drummer and percussion (no bass). They did a mix of tunes from the new album and a bunch of oldies, including I'm a Man, Light Up, Had to Cry, Can't Find My Way, Higher Love, Crossroads, and a highlight for me: Back In the High Life, with Winwood on mandolin. Most of the tunes had a pretty jazzy feel.

To sweeten the deal, they sold Nine Lives, Winwood's latest, for $10.

Winwood is doing a few other small venues, which makes for a much more pleasant experience that seeing him as an opener for Petty in the summer sheds.

I also learned a tatsty tidbit from the sound man: There will be a Clapton-Winwood DVD (from the three MSG shows) sometime in the fall. It should include the full setlist, with tracks taken from different nights.

Good to hear that Winwood is doing some small shows. Winrood plays all the bass notes with the foot pedals on the B3. Good review.

Thanks Alan. I guess I'll have to wait for the Petty show to get my Steve fix again. Looking forward to the DVD as well. Best Buy has Winwood's album for $9.99 right now; I could not pull the trigger though.

A couple of pictures...

You can see how small the stage is:

Glad to see Jose Neto is back on guitar with the band - a Brazilian guitar wiz. After his 4 solo shows in the US, he's back for one small gig in London at the Scala [1,000 capacity] He likes these small gigs as perfect warm ups. Saw him in Brighton last March in front of circa 250 folks.

June 17 | Verona, NY | Turning Stone Casino
June 18 | Atlantic City, NJ | Borgata Resort and Spa
June 20 | New York City | Beacon Theater
June 21 | Westbury, NY | North Fox Theater
June 23 | Hampton Beach, NH | Hampton Beach Casino
June 24 | Mashantuck, CT | Foxwoods Casino
June 25 | Danbury, CT | Ives Concert Park

I found these on Jambase, and don't think most of these dates are even on Winwood's site or on Pollstar. The Beacon is really a surprise. He may be trying to keep them low key, since the venues are all small.

Not sure, but I don't think those June Winwood dates are correct. He'll be with Petty for most of them and Steely Dan is at The Beacon on June 20th.
