Every now & then I check out the Today In History section and I noticed that they played a song called "Can't Get To Heaven on a Ten Dollar Bill" today in Little Rock back in '95. I've never heard of this song and can't seem to google anything on it...anyone know who wroite this? Is it one of Gregg's songs?

It showed up in the '95 shows.

They played it at the Tower Theatre run in '95 a couple times

That's all I know about it

I'm pretty sure Dickey wrote this one. They played this at Radio City in '95 and he introduced it as a "new song." To be perfectly honest it's not one of their best tunes, and listening to a tape of it gives me the impression that the song wasn't quite finished yet. It's pretty much your standard mid-tempo, country-blues tunes that doesn't really go anywhere.

I like this tune and I don't know why so many don't. It's not Blue Sky but its a fun little shuffle. In fact the Little Rock 95 version is one of my favorites.

I thought Billy Joe Shaver wrote the song. Maybe not.

thanks for the insight everyone.
without pulling up every release, I'm assuming (if it was an ABB tune) that it never made an album then...

I had a chance to speak to Warren & Woody about this back in 98. "You Can't Get to Heaven on a Ten Dollar Bill" was a song written by Dickey that they performed only for a few months in '95. Dickey was never very happy with it and indeed it doesn't sound like anyone was thrilled with the song. It's basically similar to the intro riff of "Low Down Dirty Mean" with lyrics and the full band joining in. (I haven't listened to in a long time, but that's the way I remember it). If I can figure out how to do it, I'd be happy to post an MP3 of one of the versions I have of it. Thanks, Paul.
