Do you call yourself a hippie/old hippie/new hippie. What does define a hippie?
I am in the middle of the largest country fest in the south. The Suwannee River Jam.

I have told several people that I have been to 3 festivals in the last 3 weeks. They say I must be a hippie?

People that know me do I look like a hippie? I hope so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kentucky Headhunters were great.

I am one more hippie MF I guess?????????????????

Cause I like to see all kinds of music. Have you ever tailgaited at a football game? Have you ever been to a Nascar race? Thats where I am now.

Nice looking girls I must admit.

A clean (in all senses of the word) hippie... Peace, love, music, but showers and no dope!

I was camped out at Stone Mountain (outside Atlanta) in '94 when the Dead was in town for a couple of days,22 years old, & I had a realization of what being a "hippie" really meant to me.I had recently cut my hair a little shorter than it had been.I met alot of different people there. There was one group of folks who looked like the classic epitomy of what hippies are supposed to look like, the problem was if you didn't look like them and/or come from Louisiana or wherever they had come from they were real abnoxious to you(no,they didn't think I was a cop either ).I paid alot of attention to how people in general acted & reacted to one another. Some of the coolest, kindest people I met didn't fit the classic hippie mold,& anybody who was into the Dead(same with the ABB) knows that people from all different walks are in the scene.I thought back to the original hippies in the 60s & realized the reasons they grew their hair & dressed differently from the 'norm' of society had more to do with the fact that it shouldn't matter what someone looks like, what kind of clothes they're wearing, the length of their hair,ect...,it was about the principles a person carries, principles of love, peace, brotherhood, trying to find ways to co-exist in harmony, friendship & fun, knowing the earth & love her gifts, having children & raising the well - & not sit in judgemant of one another based upon shallow materialism but rather live in accordance with deeper concepts & philosophies. It shouldn't matter if someone looks different from you,how they dress or the length of their hair. These so-called "hippies"(or non-hippies) who are exclusive & believe that to be a hippie one is relegated to any one particular look are missing the entire point!

I'm 53, I still smoke dope and attend concerts regularly. I try to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Yeah, I'm a hippie. Notwithstanding that I shower daily, wear clean clothes, have short hair and a professional career for around $87,000 a year.

my hair may be long & i may look a certain way--but those are not the key to Hippiehood as i grasp it--more in the attitude

I think the term favored by actual members of the counter culture (late 60's and 70's) was "freaks".

The original real hippies? They're the stock brokers who don't wear underwear.

"hippie" died.

quote:
The residents of the Haight themselves formed a ďDeath of HippieĒ march in October[1967] to mark the end of an era that started out as a pure, social experiment but which had become polluted by outsiders and persecuted by the authorities after only two years.

After that it was just trying to survive the undifferentiated weirdness, while the word hippie was coopted by the media.

I live in a middle class neighborhood and retired from normal jobs, but I always said 'I was an old hippie who never quite made the change to yuppie.'

warjag - i guess this weekend you are a redneck hippy. have fun.

Redneck Hippie by Vince Herman

Iím a redneck hippie, it donít make sense
Iím a redneck hippie on both sides of the fence
Iím a good olí boy and Iím a flower child
I love to get stoned I like to get wild
Iím a redneck hippie, what am I gonna do?

Well I used to be stoned out in California with hair hanging down my back
Well I smoked my kools and popped my pills and burned that incense down
I still like a buzz every now and then but I turned my head around
I got me a job just workiní real hard for the government

Iím a redneck hippie, it donít make sense
Iím a redneck hippie on both sides of the fence
Iím a good olí boy and Iím a dope smokiní fiend
I love to get stoned and I like to get mean
Iím a redneck hippie, what am I gonna do?

Well my hairís not as long as it used to be
But it still hangs down my back
When I see my boss and his flat top I thank God that Iím not like that
I like that kick-ass country band, it used to be rock n roll
But when itís party time I let it all hang out and my hippie side takes control

I agree.......

I came in at the end of the real Hippie era, so I always considered myself a "Freak". There was some pretend Hippies during School in the 70's. But I consider the pioneers to be the folks that was part of the scene in the 60's. After that it was only wannabes.

Just the way I feel about it.
