Yesterday I visited Rose Hill to pay my respects to Brother Duane and Brother Berry. The fence is complete and the landscaping looks gorgeous -- what an improvement! The grave site is now a beautiful place of serenity. It is a wonderful addition to Rose Hill and a truly great honor to our Brothers. I thought I would share some photos I took.

[EDIT: If the embedded images are not showing in your browser, click here: http://www.pbase.com/hophead/rose_hill&page=all and the whole gallery will open in a new window.]

This shot was taken while approaching the site. The guy in the red shirt was already there and was not part of our party. Notice that there is a new monument with a plaque just inside the fence.

Axle grease caked on the fence top.

Axle grease staining the arm and shirt of the guy who was leaning against the fence taking pictures.

There is axle grease smeared on the fence post here, but it's hard to see because of the color. That tiny white dot is a windblown flower petal that has stuck to the grease.

The white dot is in the exact center of this shot, showing the greased fence is in the center of the viewing area -- right where the guy in the red shirt was leaning to take his photo. There is no sign notifying visitors that the fence is coated with grease.

It is still possible to take good pictures of the graves if one is careful not to touch the fence and get greased.

Duane's grave.

Both graves.

This is Berry's grave, but in trying not to touch the fence unfortunately one of the fence uprights became visible.

This is the new granite monument with plaque that has been added to the gravesite just inside the fence.

The plaque honors the people and organizations important to the fence fund -- I do not know the criteria used to determine whose names were used nor the order they appear. I wonder why, if names are cited, that no mention is made of the 100s of regular fans who sent in a donation? In fact, I wasn't aware that a plaque with people's names was going to be part of the restoration.

I leaned back against the handrail to take this shot.

Oops! I didn't realize the handrail was greased too -- it's going to be difficult to take those stains out of my shorts and my car seat.

Wish I could see the photos, they are not showing up for me.

Hey now Wayne -

I don't know what could be the problem -- others are seeing the photos just fine. You could go to my online album and see all the pictures from my trip to Macon yesterday:

Beautiful pics. Looks like a wonderful way to spend Earth Day.

Question.
Why so much grease?

Wouldn't coating the top suffice?

It's too bad any grease is applied to this fence. Kind of defeats the purpose. But the site looks so much better than it did one year ago.

The grease is a bit much. It was there in Feb. when I stopped by after the Macon Film Festival.

Can't really say I like the plaque. It's inclusive and exclusive at the same time.

Heres Ron, Joe Bell, and Bill Ector (far right) on June 15, 1991 at the same spot. Great photos Ron. (copyrighted photo from the front of Issue 2/Fall 1992 of Hittin' The Note. I have every issue...no reprints....

Did I mention I have every issue?

I have thought about this long enough, so I'm going to say it because I'm sure there are others out there thinking the same thing....

Only two headstones should occupy that tiny spot of land in Rosehill. A sign I would understand, but not a headstone. Vanity, which is all it is.

Duane and Berry have rested now for thirty something years in this spot and have weathered vandalism, etchings, people sitting on them, whiskey, beer…and now this.

I see a spot in the upper corners for Wal-Mart and Target.

This is the ultimate graffiti. I think I’m going to go throw up.

Springer, I don't think that is what he is referring to, and I agree with him, total vanity.

Actually Springer, I did know, I was just wasting some bandwidth. But here a question you could answer to waste some bandwidth of your own. How long was it after Duane passed that he was actually laid to rest in that spot? I know when he passed but when was he actually buried?

Well then, why would he care? His family doesn't own it.

I don't own the rivers either, or the mountains, or the air. I'm just passing through, so why would I want my name attached to the gravesite of any person? That they lived and died is enough.

Springer, is that marble hard? You wouldn't care. Go away.

I have spent many peaceful times at Rose Hill (and some not so peaceful). I doubt I'll go back. I prefer to remember it as it was.
Guess the fence and the viewing stand didn't make much difference except to.....nevermind....I'm bound to get pounced on.

I think some people forget that there is are other great historical sites to witness at rose hill besides the tombs with which we speak! Don't get me wrong, I go there to be with Berry and Duane every chance I get, but I also spent four other hours once looking at totally unrelated parts of the cemetary. I think there is a jewish section, a civil war cemetary, and various other important gravesites there! Lets not forget, this is a public place, with private plots. As long as you are not being a vandal or disrespectful, you shouldn't be bothered!

If you are a Civil War buff, one place of interest is the grave of Peter Bracken, the engineer of the Texas.
That was the locomotive that chased the Anderson gang after they stole the General from Big Shanty. It was actually the third locomotive used, because of tracks removed by Anderson's Raiders. The really big thing about the chase was that the Texas was run backwards most of the chase.

There is a Jewish cemetery, a Catholic cemetery, an old slave cemetery, and in Carnation Ridge above the gravesite is where several Spanish American War soldiers are buried.
One of the old fish ponds is still there, if you know where to look.
