IM a huge fan of the orginal line up from 69-71..Dickey and Duane played like gods!!
Also love the current line up and Derek and Warren are 2 fantastic players..
i have a (maybe stupid) question..of all the guitar players that have been in the band who do you folks think is the most technical of them??
i think dickey betts and derek trucks when its comes to playing fast and slot of scales up and down..but heart and soul and feeling is the most important i think..just a question

The most technical guitarists in the ABB would probably be a show-down between Jimmy Herring and Jack Pearson.

Of the current guitarists, I would say its pretty dang close between the two of them. And while you've got a point about Dickey Betts "playing fast" and "lots of scales up and down," I would counter that Duane's ability to mix in modes ("Dreams") would make him the champ amongst the original guitarists.

Jimmy Herring, no doubt. He is one of the most talented/technical guitarists around, period. He gets love from technical masters like Steve Vai, etc.

I say Jimmy Herring in a land slide. In a band like the ABB, technical ability isn't any more important as soul and feeling though. Both Warren and D Trucks ooze with both..IMO

It's funny though because those three men are my three favorite guitar players.

I saw Jack Pearson once back in 96 at my first ABB show and then again at the 2006 Chicago show when he subbed for Warren and he is a fantastic guitarist as well. I love Dickey Betts as well.

I'll adnit to a great bias in these threads. Having said that, Jack Pearson is the best technical player I've ever heard. Ask great players, they'll likely say the same. I know that Chet Atkins was a fan of Jack's abilities. He wanted Jack to pllay with Oscar Peterson, jazz's best piano technician. Okay, got my Nomex underwear on, flame away.

I heard a story where someone asked Jaimoe the question, "If Duane had lived, what do you think he would be doing musically?" He answered, "He'd be Jack Pearson." I think Bluedad told me that story, but I forget where he heard it.

can you pick up some of Jack Pearsons other stuff/bands etc at large retial stores like Best Buy, Virgin Records or anything? I would love to hear some of his catalog considering the only thing I know about him is from the two ABB shows I saw with him on lead.

I don't Dickey is so much a "technical player" as he is a "signature player". Now as far as "technical players" (and by that I mean players with a DEEP knowledge of what can played on a guitar) in the ABB, I would echo what a lot of other people have said and that would be Jack Pearson and Jimmy Herring. Granted Dickey, Duane, Warren and Derek are all great "world class" players, but once again I think they fall more into a "signature player" catagory then the "technical player" catagory.

Jack's last release " Do Whats Right" is my top pick for 07.

Ditto CUH. Go back and read Red Dog's account of Jack's "audition" The guy is playing Bird on a guitar tuned to open G with HIGH action. Try that if you want to be humbled. Supposedly, Dickey told threst of the band "well, we can hire him or I'm going to get lessons from him" I love Herring but Jack is in his own world.

The term "technical" throws me off here. If the question was more direct or exact..like "skilled" or "talented"..I would agree with most of the posts above. being a guitar player, and used in this context, I see the word technical as meaning almost robotic, by the book, one that just runs through the scales with no passion.

I play guitar, have been for 20+ years. Dickey is the king of penatonics. Not a dig, but not a technical player.

Dickey can play, one of my biggest influences, but when you analyze his playing, his solos are are in the same 3 -4 boxes. Besides, bluesmen shouldn't be too technical. I always wonder what Duane would be playing these days. Would be be more like Clapton or Jeff Beck?

Warren Haynes has my vote followed by Duane and Dickey. Jack Pearson is a great guitarist but I didn't really care for what he contributed to the Allman Brothers Band when he filled in.....IMHO!
