Someone please explain to me the reasons for and proper use of Patchouli Ė because I just donít get it. Seriously, Iím not trying to be flippant, but itís use is so heavy (in more ways than one) that there must be some history or some magical powers associated with it.

Is it meant to disguise body odors of the wearer? Come on people, wear deodorant, or it you are opposed to that, take a shower. Because if this is the reason, sorry but itís not working. The combination of BO and Patchouli is toxic!

Perhaps in moderation it would not be so bad. But I always run into people who are dripping in it. And sometimes they are frat boys in polos. Has it become some sort of urban-hippie rite-of-passage??

Why is no other essential oil as popular? Am I the only one who finds Patchouli unpleasant?

Good morning and thanks for listening

I have never understood Patchouli's appeal. And my apologies to any Patchouli users here as I'm not trying to offend, but I also find it most unpleasant.

If I had to create a name for it, I would call it "Musty Attic" because that's how it smells to me.

Everything you wanted to know about patchouli but weren't almost afraid to not ask.

I find it really depends on the brand. I still have a vial from the early 70's that is much different than the Patchouli I come across these days.

I like this company carried by the Whole Foods Market
http://www.kuumbamade.com/

Also Kiss My Face Peaceful Patchouli with Hemp Seed Oil soap also found at Whole Foods is light scented

Kuumba Amber & Sandalwood and Egyptian Musk are my current favorites

Have smelled it, don't like it.

I had to ask someone what that putrid smell was and was told it was patchouli...

Yes indeed, ran into it alot at Wanee.

I use patchouli & amber mixed oils.....also sandalwood.....Rasta (which is patchouli & opium)
I LOVE OILS!!!.........and trust me,I don't smell like a musty attic in anyway!

Essential Oils are amazing to cling onto the skin & when placed on the pulse points & pressure points on your body, there is a theraputic quality.

I'm with you, Rhonda. When it is used instead of bathing, it is obnoxious.

Sandalwood is my favorite , but good "essential" oils are getting harder and harder to find. Nagchampa is my favorite, but it is rare to find it in this area. I get the sticks from spencers gift and they are the real deal from Shrinivas Sugandhalaya, but haven't seen the liquid since the 2 nd further festival (1997) but have only been out a year or 2 so an ounce of the pre oil lasted me, 10 years.

I use patchouli, opium, sandalwood, etc, but not to mask body odor. I just use it as a perfume. Have had quite a few compliments but no one has told me I smell bad...yet.

MINT!? Never would have guessed it!

Patchouli (also patchouly or pachouli) is bushy herb of the mint family, with erect stems, reaching two or three feet (about 0.75 metre) in height and bearing small pale pink-white flowers. The plant is native to tropical regions of Asia and is now extensively cultivated in Caribbean countries, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Philippines, West Africa and Vietnam.

The scent of patchouli is heavy and strong. It has been used for centuries in perfumes and continues to be so today. The word derives from the Tamil patchai பச்சை (green), ellai இலை (leaf).

Pogostemon cablin, P. commosum, P. hortensis, P. heyneasus and P. plectranthoides are all cultivated for their oils and all are known as 'patchouli' oil, but P. cablin is considered superior.

I like patchouli but a little goes a long way. As with all scents, just a hint is nice. I like to buy plain body oil and mix my own scents. Love amber, bergamot, vetiver, sandlewood, jasmine, nag champa, lavender, frankinscence, sage, musk. (In a pretty little bottle with a little charm tied around it with a ribbon, makes a nice gift, too). I also like an oil that is called Rain - very clean smell. And the Kiss My Face Peaceful Patchouli body scrub is nice - not an overbearing. Also like the bergamot scented body scrub from the Body Shop.

I love essential oils and make all my own bath salts, lotions, creams, salves, perfumes, etc. I have a perfume I named 'Woodstock' that's a blend of patchouli, sandalwood and several other oils that create a light, longlasting, sensual blend. And you can't beat essential oils for healing!!!

Always remeinds me of a GD show that I saw on a rainy day. The smell of the crowd was intense as it had been raining for a few days and those following were drenched. Don't know if it was wet patchouli smell or people trying the mask their wet smell but it was sickening. Every time I smell it, I am reminded of that day.

No offence intended for Bird at all but people will rarely tell others that they stink. If you take a poll on patchouli more will tell you that they don't like it than those that do. My buddy calls it Stinking Hippy or Scent of The Wookie.

It is a very '70's smell to me. It reminds me of old head shops, hippies, etc.

People need to rethink their scent approach. According to scientific research (not kidding), a combination of pumpkin pie and lavender scents signficantly increased blood flow to men's nether regions, while a combination of the scents of Good-n-Plenty candy and cucumber did the trick for women.

Sorry, have to vote thumbs down on Patchouli. I know a lot of people like it but the odor repulses me. Maybe it's because people overindulge in it's use thinking more must be better. I can't think of another reason why so many bathe in it. I've rarely encountered a person who wore it consertively.

CM, I had to laugh at your friends nickname for the scent. The folks I know refer to it as "Hippy Stink".
