Man! How I would LOVE to own this bass! Thing is, I can't afford to go one dime over the opening price. Can't afford that, really but I'd dig that much up somehow. I hope one of our own ends up with it.

Of course, I would save the $38.00 shipping cost!

He must be real fond of your old bass Rusty !

ps you gonna have to pay tax which might be more than shipping unless he cancels the ad has a garage sale and you buy it there.

Good luck Rusty, I know you would really like this.

that really isnt a bad price , giving the fact they are offering a few other bonus goods with it , it looks like the back of the neck is painted

and ill never own another instrument with a painted neck , been down that road once
and dont want to go down it again

No, the back of the neck isn't painted; that's the finish that Modulus made for the bass. It's smooth to the touch.

Does anyone know the true value of this bass? I'm like you Dave, a 4 stringer. Maybe an old dog like me can learn some new tricks. I bet a Ben Franklin my 18 yr. old could thump this guitar, but of course as a LEAD player, he doesn't play bass.

Mulehead, I made that remark tongue in cheek. I have a 5 string Fender Jazz, as well as three 4 stringers. If I had Oteil's chops, I'd play 6 strings. Hell, there are 7, 8 and even 10 string basses out there, and they are single string units, not doubles, like the typical 8 stringers that are 4 X 2. My personal opinion is, once you get passed the 12th fret, or start playing the C string on a 6er, it's not bass anymore. Oteil is a soloist, though, and I'm not. He CAN play all the strings at all the positions. The difference between me and Oteil's playing styles are like night and day. I'm a Corvair and he's a Cadillac.

That must put me in the Yugo catagory Dave....lol. I play a walking style, and try to incorporate a few Bootsy Collins slaps in now and then. I have a couple Fenders, and an old 71 Ibanez Rick copy they got sued over. My newest addition is a Hohner acoustic electric with a preamp on it. It sounds, and plays great! They don't set you back much either. I picked it up new on Ebay for $250.00 including shipping!

Is it just me or is it a little ironic that this is up for sale right on the coat tails of all these cancellations? I mean, this was one of Oteil's main axes. I guess if you gotta scrounge for change . . . we've all been there.

I don't think Oteil is selling it. Mark Kimbrell - former/future guitarist for the Peacemakers - is selling it. It could be that Mark is selling it on behalf of Oteil, but I believe Oteil gave it to Mark as a gift awhile back and Mark is now selling it. Not certain though.

I also wonder if this is THE bass that was Oteil's #1 gigging bass in the mid-to-late 90s. I'm sure (and certain) that Modulus gave Oteil several basses when they were developing his signature line of basses, so it could be a different one that Oteil owned. The ebay listing isn't entirely clear about that. In the Q&A at the bottom of the auction listing, it also mentions that it only has a couple nicks, but is otherwise in excellent condition. Given the number of dates Oteil played back then, I'd imagine his #1 gigging bass had a few more nicks than that. Back in the club days, Oteil would just throw it in a gig bag and put it on his back like a backpack and walk around like that. Seems like his #1 gigging bass would've incurred its fair share of nicks and scratches over the years. But who knows....

That's my understanding of the situation, Drew...

I haven't seen Oteil onstage with his Modulus in quite some time. That beautiful Fodera six and the two old Fenders have occupied his stage time the past few years that I've seen him.

I saw Oteil last Thursday night playing a benefit gig for the Lymphoma/Leukemia society with Jeff "Apt. Q258" Sipe, Ike Stubblefield, Jeff Coffin, and Grant Green (one of the best shows I've seen in a long long while, BTW) and Oteil had the Fodera 6 and a red Fender P-bass. It didn't look like the Fenders i've seen him play with the ABB (aren't those Jazz basses?), but he really seemed to dig the Fender. He played the Fender 90% of the evening, and he and Sipe drove the train all night. They brought their A-game for sure.

Oteil has been using the red Precision for a while now. It's a '63 and IIRC, he got it from Jimmy Vivino. He says he likes the full tone of it. Those '63's are hard to beat. I had a sunburst '63 Precision I let someone talk me out of back in the early 90's. Letting it go is one of the biggest regrets I've ever had...
