I always get a little sad when it is time to remove the bracelets at the end of a concert. Especially when the experience was as amazing as this one turned out to be. When I first arrived at the Spirit of the Suwanee I was given two items to help me survive the week: a small flashlight to hang around my neck and a badge with my name on it and the words "If found, please return to Helen's Hilton" scrawled across the back. At the end of the weekend I hung these precious keepsakes on my rearview window. As I drove those long hours back to Mississippi I had time to reflect on the significance of these two items and how they related to life.

The first was a tiny flashlight that hung around my neck. It gave off just enough light so that I could see the next step and no more. With this small tool I was able to navigate in the dark, step by step, little by little. Slowly and steadily I was able to make it through the unknown darkness. With the little light shining I was able to follow the unlit path that led me to the music, to the pureness of the guitar strings and the steady rythm of the drums.

The next, and most important was the name badge that I wore the entire time I was there. On the front was my name, and on the back there were those magic words: If found, please return to Helen's Hilton. It was my insurance policy. If I got a little wound up in the festivities and could not remember where I was supposed to be, someone would see that badge and take me back to the place where I belonged. As I was driving I began to think about what those words really meant to me and to all the people who wore them. My new incredibly funny friend Karen told me that she changed the word "if" on her badge to the word "when." It was only a matter of time before she lost her way.

On Saturday the group all gathered around the camp fire to pray for and remember all of the people that could not be there. And as they spoke each name, tears fell from the eyes of the gatherers. That was the time that truly defined what Helen's Hilton is for me. Yes, it is a wonderful place to find food, shelter, and probably someone picking tunes out on the guitar. But the heart of Helen's Hilton is the love that everyone feels for each other. Love was truly in the air for that hour that we spent gathered around the fire.

As I gazed at my name badge hanging from my rear view mirror I found myself wishing that I could wear it all year long. Because I know that, inevitably, I will get lost. But I know that there will be a place resounding in love. Thank you everyone for making me feel like I belonged. Thank you Nancy, Karen, Erin, John, Keith, Pat, Ellen, David, Tony and everyone else I met for making my first Wannee experience so special. Thank you Mikey for showing me the music. And thank you Helen, for the Hilton and for so much more. So even though I can't wear that badge all year, if found please return to me Helen's Hilton.

This is the best "first post" I have ever read on this site. We too hung our lanyards from our rear view mirrors. They are still hanging there. The Prayer Circle was very special. Very well written lil_jessica.
Glad you had a memorable time.....

Jessica - wonderful post! Wasn't able to make is to Wanee myself and your words brought a wistful tear to my eye for that reason - you expressed so well some of the spirit behind all the loving vibes and magical family moments that occurred last (LONG) weekend and are now being relived and shared on this board through stories and pics and videos. Welcome home - and by home I refer of course to the land of peaches!

Beautiful words, Jessica. They made me tear up as well. I love it when people who haven't been there (be it Helen's Hilton, Jam for Duane, Beacon, GABBA, etc.) "get it."

I hope to see you soon.

Why, with their little sheep hands, of course.
