I'll be going to the show here in Chicago. Unfortunately, Derek won't be playing here as originally planned but that's show biz. Should be a great time. That is if I don't get attacked by a mountain lion.

I posted this is the Derek forum

FROM SUN-TIMES WIRES

Looking for an excuse to avoid celebrating Earth Day? ‘‘There’s nothing going on nearby’’ is probably not going to fly.

Eight simultaneous Earth Day festivals are planned at major cities around the U.S. on April 20, organizers have announced.

The free events will be staged at parks in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco. The flagship event will be the Earth Day 2008 celebration on the National Mall in Washington.

Chicago’s arm of the Green Apple Festival will take place at the Lincoln Park Zoo, featuring live music by the Derek Trucks Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Meshell Ndegeocello, Chicago Afrobeat Project, Miss Lori Holton Nash (PBS Kids) and the Gwalla Gwallas. The day’s events will be emceed by Kyle Orton of the Chicago Bears.

Organizers hope to get more people talking about global warming.

‘‘I think the issue of the environment hopefully crosses party lines,’’ producer Peter Shapiro said. ‘‘Our goal with this event is to make Earth Day more prominent.’’

The events are being billed as the nation’s largest Earth Day celebration. Producers of the Green Apple Festival, which began three years ago in New York, and the Earth Day Network, a nonprofit created by the founders of the original Earth Day in 1970, are putting on the shows.

The Roots will headline the Washington event with the U.S. Capitol as their backdrop, along with political leaders, various speakers and other musical acts. Speakers will range from Richard Cizik, vice president of the National Association of Evangelicals, to the Rev. Jesse Jackson, members of Congress and possibly some presidential candidates, said Kathleen Rogers, president of Earth Day Network. (They’re still trying to book Al Gore.)

In New York, country singer Ricky Skaggs will perform in Central Park, and the Latin group Menudo will take the stage in Miami with hip-hop group Arrested Development. Los Lonely Boys will be the headline act in Dallas while the Neville Brothers take their funk and R&B act to Denver. Mickey Hart is expected to perform at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

It poured most of the day in DC. By the time I could make it to the mall, the event had been cancelled.

Did anyone make the DC gig? How about the other cities?

Didn't even try as it was raining hard off and on all yesterday. Heard that Warren was able to get his "solo set" in, but the Mule was one of the bands that didn't get to play.

Warren Haynes
Green Apple Fest
Washington, DC
April 20, 2008

Fallen Down
Wasted Time
In My Life
One

Yes, Warren was able to get his solo set in but Mule did not play due to the even t getting canceled because of the rain.

I was able to get my car at the end of the field where the stage was and watch Warren's performance from my car on one of the large monitor screens. It was a beautiful performance and I loved hearing In My Life. That is one beautiful song. The whole set was great and well played. I hope someone taped it or a video surfaces. I was able to catch a few performances not too far from the stage before Warren but it rained very hard and the organizers said to come back in a half hour. So my friend and I sought shelter in my car and I drove it closer to see what was up and luckily, the Warren solo set happened not to long after that since I was in an illegal spot. No cops bothered me though and my friend and I were able to listen and see his performance.

Right after his performance it it started to rain and thunder again and the announcer said that was it, the rest of the show was canceled. Too bad as I hear that Warren was going to come out and play with the Roots. Man did I want to see that. Oh well, another time hopefully.
