Here's a new game. I believe that Warren Haynes can be linked to virtually every other rock musician by less than six degrees. Let's see how many we can get. I will start off with a couple of easy ones to explain what I mean. If necessary you can use songs of other artists but its better to use actual connections. For example

Warren is connected to Eric Clapton in at least the following ways:

1. Eric played in Cream with Jack Bruce. Jack played with Warren on the Gov't Mule album "The Deep End"

2. Eric played with Duane Allman with Derek and the Dominos. Duane Allman founded the Allman Brothers Band. Warren ultimately took Duane's place in the AllmanBrothers Band.

3. Eric Clapton played with Derek Trucks on his recent tour. Derek Trucks plays with Warren in the Allman Brothers Band.

Here is another one: Warren and the Who.

John Entwistle played with the who. John played with Warren on the Gov't Mule album "The Deep End".

Others can take it from here:

Hot Tuna - Jack Cassidy on one of the 'Deep End' albums.
Yes - Chris Squire also from the 'Deep End era.

I could keep going and I'm sure I as well as Doug could fill a whole page with connections. Lets get everyone involved though. Very interesting thread topic Doug!

Patti LaBelle . . .

Now I'll go see if I can solve it.

Okay:

1. Pattie LaBelle sang on her own album "Winner in You," whereon Mike Landau played guitar.
2. Mike Landau played guitar on the Rod Stewart album A Spanner in the Works
3. Rod Stewart performed with Ron Wood in The Faces
4. Ron Wood is a member of the Rolling Stones and plays with Chuck Leavell
5. Chuck Leavell has played extensively with Warren Haynes.

Only Five degrees of separation between Patti LaBelle and Warren Haynes. There might be shorter routes.

Once you open it up to the session players (Mike Landau), you can probably make any connection.

How about Elvis? Who wants to try the King?

Cool. I figured there'd be a Patti/Aretha collaboration somewhere, but I was too lazy to look for it. As soon as I found somebody who played guitar for Patti, I just looked to see who else he had worked with/for.

Personally, as a guy who played "Six Degrees of Keven Bacon" almost since its inception, I don't like the Duane>Warren link. Warren never worked with Duane. You'd have to add another step in there - Duane worked with Gregg Allman, Gregg Allman works with Warren Haynes.

Official Rules:

1) Duane to Warren is a no-no, Must Be Duane>Current Allman Brother>Warren if the chain is connected to ABB

Well obviously you can automatically connect Duane to Warren no matter what through Gregg and the ABB so to make it tougher, let's eliminate the Duane connection since Duane played with so many people.

How many ways can we connect Jerry Garcia to Warren even though the two never met? Here's one:

Jerry Garcia played with Phil Lesh in the Grateful Dead. Warren played with Phil Lesh in Pjil Lesh and Friends.

My good friend Mike P. I'll explain

Mike P. managed a local band out of Jersey called One-Eyed-Jack
Mike met Stephanie with a demo tape in NYC,Stephanie is married to Warren
Mike works for Fuchs custom amps.
Andy Fuchs himself a guitar player has designed a custom amp that Warren intends
to use in upcoming Mule tour. Mike just recently delivered the amp to Warren's guitar tech

I'll bump this one time to see if anyone else wants to take a crack at it. Otherwise, that will be it.

drummer d.j. fontana and guitarist scotty moore from elvis' band played on paul mccartney's version of "that's all right (mama)".

sir paul played with eric clapton on the beatles recording of "while my guitar gently weeps".

ABB guitarist derek trucks has toured with e.c.

derek and warren in the ABB.

easy enough.

3. Pizza is often accompanied by soda.
4. Diet Sprite is a flavor of soda.
5. To reference "The Deepest End" DVD, on May 3, 2003, Warren Haynes was plagued by a backstage refreshment fiasco involving this flavor of soda as per his quote "I didn't just sweat twenty pounds out to drink a f*cking Diet Sprite."

Luciano Pavarotti ,aside from the joke , this one is actually easy. Luciano Pavoratti has Performed with Sheryl Crow , who has performed with ( and aslo dated ) Eric Clapton who has performed with Derek Trucks who plays in the ABB with Warren Haynes !

Another interesting Aretha and Duane connection is through their backup bands- Aretha backed by King Curtis and the Kingpins who sat in with the Allmans at the Beacon a couple of years ago.

Or if you use the song connections (OK per Doug's original post). Duane backed Aretha on The Weight, and that's the arrangement used by the ABB.

King Curtis also adds connections to Duane and Gregg and thus Warren, via the Delaney & Bonnie A & R recording (and thus to Clapton with D&B as well as Little Feat), by Duane's (and Gregg's) participation at Curtis's funeral, and adds connections to Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, thus the Rolling Stones and sadly enough to Bill Clinton, since the Stones played a fund raiser for Clinton at the Beacon (Bill Clinton the sax player, not the president).

If you add Susan Tedeschi singing The Weight at the same Beacon show, to the performers she has played with, ranging from Bonnie Raitt to Buddy Guy to Bob Dylan you have a basis for a few more connections.

Anyone want to try themselves in this 6 degree's game ? I was thinking there was no way for myself and then I remembered............I dated Gloria Riveria in H.S. , whose brother is Mark Riveria ( noted NYC session player most notably with Billy Joel ) who has played In Ringo Starr's All Starr Band which has had John Entwhistle as a member and he played with Warren Haynes for the "Deep End" project. I did it !! Can you ?

Ha! Hilarious, and remarkably, I can do it:

1. Top Droog has jammed (definitely once, but I think twice) with Noam Pikelny of Leftover Salmon.
2. Noam Pikelny and Jeff Sipe play together in Leftover Salmon
3.a. Jeff Sipe has played with both Jimmy Herring and Susan Tedeschi
3.b. and I assume Derek at some point, and quite probably Warren Himself, but just in case:
4. Jimmy Herring and Susan Tedeschi have jammed with Warren Haynes.

So, there you have it, only 4 degrees of separation between myself and Warren Haynes - only three if Jeff Sipe has played with Warren directly, and given Warren's proclivity, that's a very strong possibility, say, at a Christmas Jam. It's also quite possible that some point that Noam and Warren have played together, cutting it down to 2 degrees.

Hell, we're almost old friends!

I shook Warren's hand at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City after a show in 1990.
In 1996, he threw a pick out, i caught it and look at it from time to time ...
