It's a beautiful day here at Wanee! We set up the HTN booth and now I'm back at the hotel for a much-needed nap. When it comes to festivals, pacing is everything

Really looking forward to Papa Mali today, one of my New Orleans favorites. He's playing at the Peach Stage at 3:30, make sure you get down there for that. Levon Helm is another special treat, I heard great things about his show in Atlanta the other day.

I'll try and post some updates throughout the weekend as possible, just to let you all know exactly how much fun you're missing!

People can you feel it?

Cool! Hope everyone has a great time

Hey Rob, will the Saturday family jam be recorded by Munch Mix? I know in years past the ABB Wanee set was always an instant live. I'd love to be able to hear what transpires on the big stage saturday night!

I'm not sure, Sandman, I think they are still deciding how to handle that. The very idea of the "Wanee Family Jam" is only about a week old, and the details are still being worked out.

We'll keep you posted!

By the way, when we pulled into the hotel at 3 AM this morning, guess who was there to help unload my truck? None other than HTW Regular Lefty Collins! Lefty is the true personification of the meaning of brotherhood. Thanks for the help Lefty!

I also saw Benjamin, pixielf and many more of your favorite HTW Recurring Characters today. The family vibe is definitely in effect

Thanks for the update, Rob!

If I get a vote, tell 'em to record it. I'd be a happy customer

Have a great time....oh, and that Lefty dude is all right...

Hey Rob! I'm sitting in my cabin about 200 yards away from you guys right now. I look foward to stopping by this afternoon, saying hi, and renewing my HTN subscription that I got last year. It is a great weekend already and can't wait for the great music to come!

Beware of the weather on Sat. Supposed to be torrential downpor throughout the southeast. Hope the gods keep it away for long enough, like they did last year.

Not looking good for the Masters, either. Supposed to rain all weekend over there. Kind of a bummer, 'cause I am looking forward to sitting on my ass and watching some amazing golf all weekend.

Enjoy the festival everyone, and I hope the rain stays away long enough.

Hope everyone has arrived safely and without a lot of airline hastles, are settling in and sharing greetings with old and new friends and getting ready for some festivities at Miss Helen's compound and with the River Road jammers (as well as you kind folks from HTN and our own Queen of Peach). Enjoy! Looking forward to your accounts!

Rob, looking forward to the reports. Pass on a 'howdy' from me to Del McCoury and his sons Rob and Ronnie. I'd appreciate it. And, while you at it, ask them about their brand new 'Sign O' The Times" CD project about these harsh economic times called "Moneyland." Definitely worthy of consideration. And to Brian Stoltz and Mr. "Joe The Singing Janitor" himself - Junior Brown, whom I last talked to along with Peter Rowan at the Tall Stacks festival. Keep the reviews of the events coming. Hopefully you won't be tied to the booth for too long.

Have fun! Stay Dry!!

Y'all batten 'em down.....tornadoes everywhere now, a building blown down in downtown Gadsden, cars blown off the road. We got it at the worst time of day, should be milder when it gets down that way. Maybe it'll be nothing, hope so.
Hope it doesn't get in the way of the good times.

Geesh...Mother Nature's in a fighting mood...

We had storms and a couple tornadoes last night in Iowa, too...

Hope the weather holds down in Florida.

Greetings and good morning from Wanee Land! Let's see, where to start...

First off, the weather yesterday was pretty sensational, and we've missed the rain so far. We are supposed to have scattered thunderstorms today, but hopefully they hold off until late tonight after all the music is over. Now on to yesterday's highlights....

Papa Mali was the perfect soundtrack to a lazy Saturday afternoon. His slide playing impressed a lot of people who hadn't seen him before, and I was thrilled to hear him play lots of Mardi Gras Indian tunes like "Big Chief Like Plenty of Firewater" and "Early In The Morning." His instrumental jam on "Ode To Billie Joe" was pretty cool too. Not the best show I've seen from him, but good stuff nonetheless.

On the other hand, that might be the best Mofro show I've seen. JJ Grey was absolutely on fire, and the horn section adds a lot to the band. "Got My Mojo Working" was no idle boast coming from JJ, that mofo had his mojo working in overdrive, let me tell you! They also did a version of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" that was worthy of Otis, with JJ showing that he has more soul than any white boy in captivity. It's a shame that the sound was a little off for their set, the high end was unbearably shrill at times, but other than that, they were positively cooking.

As for the Mule...WOW. It is going to take some time to really put that show into words, and you'll just have to wait and see our Wanee piece on www.hittinthenote.com for the full monty. However, I can tell you this much: Best show I've seen since Woody died, and maybe even better in a way than any show I saw with Woody. They were playing with a vengeance, the way they used to with Woody, and there were moments last night when I thought "This could be the best band in the world." I don't have a full setlist, I was working and missed part of the show, but check out the end of the first set...

Temporary Saint>
Third Stone From The Sun> (YES! Hendrix in the house, represent)
Doing It To Death> (The James Brown tune, aka "We're Gonna Have a Funky Good Time)
Mountain Jam>
Smokestack Lightning (with JJ Grey)

What? Are you kidding me? Man, that was just ridiculous. Here's the second set....

Play With Fire (reggae style)
Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys
Sco-Mule (Damn! Best version I've heard. Beyond ridiculous)
Lay Your Burden Down
Blind Man In The Dark

E: Cortez The Killer (oh man!)

A fantastic show, Warren and the band really gave 100% and blew away this jaded insider.

And of course, lots of friendship and fun throughout the day at the HTN booth with such HTW folks as EasyMichael, Goliath, MotherTeresa, BigDaveOnBass, Palmhead, and on and on.

Lots more great music today, including two of my funky favorites, PBS and the Greyboy Allstars. Anticipation for the Wanee Family Jam was running high yesterday, and after the blockbuster Mule show last night, the bar has been set really high.

More details to come!

Wow! That Mule set looks crazy-good. That is a Mule Trax that I'll have to pick up, for sure. Wish I could have been there. Sounds like they poured their hearts out for all the loyal fans that came out to support the festival. I really REALLY wish I could have been there to hear that "Cortez" encore. I bet that was chilling. The only time I have ever seen Neil & Crazy Horse was at the SotS during H.O.R.D.E. back in 1997. As I wrote about it on here a while back, that was one of the most magical moments of my life, and that is when I knew how special that property is. To hear Warren belt out that tune would have sent me into overdrive. Unbelievable.

I bet the crowd went absolutely NUTS when the first line of "Mountain Jam" emerged.

Enjoy today! Hopefully Karl D makes a lot of guest spots. Always a good time when that man is on stage.

Debo, it was definitely a very heartfelt performance from Warren, Danny, Matt and Andy. Warren repeatedly thanked the crowd for their support and seemed visibly grateful for the huge, enthusiastic crowd, given the last-minute cancellation of the ABB. Mule really had big shoes to fill last night, and they rose to the challenge. Well done!

Cortez was amazing. I was thinking "Well, I guess they will probably play 'Soulshne' for the encore" but when the first notes of "Cortez" floated across the field, I knew it was going to be a very special moment. At the end, Warren and the band repeatedly sang the line "He came dancing across the water" and the crowd would pick up and sing LOUD "Cortez, Cortez, what a killer."

Low Spark of High Heeled Boys with Randall Bramblett was another special treat, every bit as good as you would think. I'm sorry I didn't list Randall's name earlier, but I hadn't had any coffee yet, so give me a break He was stellar as always and added a lot to the song.

They also did a smoking hot version of That's What Love Will Make You Do with blues guitarist Larry McCray in the second set. Sorry I missed that, I've gone back and fixed the setlist. It was ultra-funky, and Larry went nuts SRV style. They also had the harmonica player from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jimmy Fadden (sp?) on this tune, and he wailed!

Well, it's time to head down to the booth, more to come.....

hey Rob. Sorry you didn't enjoy Levon more. It wasn't really what I expected, but I loved it nonetheless. Your description of the Mule show was spot on. It was was mindblowing. Nice review otherwise too. For the most part I share most of your feelings. I had never seen Papa Mali and I was one of the people impressive with his slide work...pretty impressive. You were right about him. Hope you have a good time down at the HTN booth again.

Chadwick, I don't want to give the wrong impression. I really loved Levon's set--anybody who heard me singing along loudly to "Long Black Veil" and "Rag Mama Rag" over at the Hittin' the Note booth knows that

It's probably one of those situations where expectations are TOO high. Levon is such a legend, such a treasure of American music, maybe I had built it up too much in my mind. The fact that he can even speak, much less sing, is a testament to his incredible spirit.
