I was on Youtube the other day going through aome MSG videos from the 80's.
This era of MSG was probably my favorite incarnation. I was really into MSG for a pretty good period of time and they had one of the coolest band logos IMHO. I always enjoy listening to them, and watching these videos reminded me again how great of player Schenker was and still is,.... I think. I know the last few years it's been pretty rough.

When I first started to learn how to play the guitar in the early 80's my guitar teacher was a big Schenker fan. Armed and Ready was one of my first songs that I learned how to play. I vividly remember sitting there watching him play that for the first time . I was hooked! I learned a good amount of UFO songs too.
Here are some pretty good videos if you have some time to check them out, at least watch the last two. He's on fire!!!

"F" in cool! I love Schenker one of my favorite guitarist. I getting to see UFO in April for the first time, I'm stoked! The only thing bad about it is Michael won't be there. I'm kind of excited to hear how well Vinnie Moore can handle his chops on the older stuff. I've recently been listening to the "No Heavy Petting" album, what tone on the song "ON With The Action". I downloaded onto my mp3 player and it's the highlight of my day when it comes on while I'm at work. Most of the MSG stuff I like too but the longer they went on the weaker the albums got. I wish him well, maybe someday I'll get to see him perform and hopefully he'll be sober enough to play.

I have been a Schenker fan through good and bad. I liked him with UFO, although I like Paul"Tonka"Chapman;s era just as much.

I like Schenkers solo stuff also...got lots and lots of CD's from both band eras. I have all of UFO's studio stuff except "The Monkey Puzzle" which I have on Napster. Can't find it at any music stores around my area..all they want to supply is Pop and Rap. Took me forever to find the Trower/Bruce CD.

Michael goes through to many damn singers, almost a new one on every cd, since the Gary Barden days. Some can sing good, some not so good.

I would have all of Michael's CD's, but he puts them out faster than I can find them.

Guys, I had a great UFO tribute done a few weeks ago. Probably around 30 songs, I had it broken down for each Guitarist..Schenker, Chapman, "Atomic" Tommy, Lawrence Archer and Vinnie Moore. Sat up late as hell to finish it. Was adding the pictures when a Thunderstorm rolled in, the power went of for about 2 seconds and all was gone. I just sat there with my jaw hanging open. Have not had the heart to start on it again.

Gonna do it again soon.

Good stuff with the Schenker videos above. I'm gonna enjoy them now.

The singer that I disliked the most was Graham Bonnet. Could never understand why so many people/bands got him to join. He always sounds like he is straining even on studio efforts. He is on a great Schenker album but it would be so much better with any of his other singers.

I tried to like Graham, even bought a solo album..but his voice has that harsh "Grrrrrrr" to it. Sort of like a lawn mower running on an even speed. He did a stint with Rainbow also, called "Difficult to Cure". It was to mainstream.

I think Michael used Kelly Hansen(Hurricane) on one CD, and he sounded damn good. Kelly is singing with Foreigner now.

The Rainbow album with Graham is Down To Earth. Difficult to Cure was the first one with Joe Lynn Turner.

Kelly Hansen is a great singer. Michael had another guy whose name escapes me at the moment. I believe that he sang on the Michael Schenker Story live album or the Unforgiven live album. I think his name is Kelly also because I used to mix them up.

Yes I will, I have a Schenker CD where Derek sings one song..it's a bonus song. I think it might have been one of the Graham Bonnett songs.

I totally agree on that. I thought he was awful and he played in a lot of bands in the late 70's and into the 80-'s for some reason.

I alwyas liked Gary Bardens. He was pretty solid and had a good rock voice. I always thought he might get back with Mike.
I know he sang on the MSG CD that came out a year or two ago "Heavy Hitters" and did a cover of Run for Cover. I still thought he sounded good.

I like Gary Barden also. He was in and out of the lineup a few times. I think his problem was his throat. He is victim to having the songs not always in his range and nobody realizing it at the time although it is obvious on many tracks. All of the albums he is on are my favorite MSG albums.

Funny MSG booted Graham Bonnet out in almost the same fashion as Rainbow. They just ditched him.

Brought Gary back at the last moment for a festival show to replace him with no rehearsals. The result was the BBC Radio One Live In Concert disc. You can hear that it is a little raw sounding for Gary but nice to have him back at that point. He saved the day and I think that disc is great.

Born in Sarstedt (also known as Barstedt), Germany, Schenker has had a long career that has seen him rise to become one of the most influential and respected rock guitarists working today. He started playing in his early teens when his brother Rudolf brought home a Flying V guitar, which captured Michael's imagination. Schenker debuted with Scorpions on their debut album Lonesome Crow at age 16 and was lauded at the time for his mature technique.

Schenker joined UFO under unusual circumstances. The band left the UK to play some dates in Germany. Their guitarist at the time, Bernie Marsden, forgot his passport and was unable to make the first gig. At the venue UFO spotted Michael playing a soundcheck with the Scorpions and managed to persuade him into playing that evening's show.

Shortly thereafter, Schenker was offered the lead guitar spot in UFO and with the blessing of his brother Rudolf, accepted it. At first, communication between Schenker and the rest of the band was difficult because he spoke virtually no English, instead relying on his girlfriend as an interpreter. Schenker has since become fluent in English.

Schenker wrote the music for most of UFO's major label (Chrysalis) debut album Phenomenon. His playing on this and subsequent UFO albums attracted attention from music critics and especially from the guitar community. Schenker's melodic style and clear, articulate playing were rooted in the approach of Hank Marvin who with his band the Shadows, was influential in establishing the electric guitar as a lead instrument. Also evident in Schenker's playing is the familiar and fundamental blues-based hard rock framework established by players like Jimmy Page, Leslie West, and Jeff Beck.

Schenker had a turbulent career with UFO, often walking out mid-song and causing shows to be canceled. Despite having a series of successful albums and tours, Schenker finally left UFO in October 1978 (last show in Palo Alto, California).

Schenker re-joined the Scorpions in late 1978, when they were recording the album Lovedrive, thus resulting in his contribution of lead guitar on 3 songs ("Another Piece Of Meat","Coast To Coast" and "Lovedrive"). In 1979, Schenker toured with the band in support for the album but 3 months later, after numerous occasions he could not perform on stage (due to fatigue and alcohol problems), he finally left the band and was permanently replaced by Matthias Jabs (who originally joined the Scorpions before Schenker's return, and recorded the rest of the lead guitars apart from the three pieces which Michael played.)

Schenker was offered jobs with Aerosmith (detailed in their biography Walk This Way) and Ozzy Osbourne. Osbourne said in a 1982 Hit Parader interview that he did contact Schenker following the death of Randy Rhoads:

It so happens I did contact Michael Schenker, but he wanted a king's ransom before he'd do anything...I don't need that annoyance.

Schenker decided he wanted to play his own music and not be a hired hand for another band. In 1979, he founded the Michael Schenker Group.

The history of MSG is strewn with personality conflicts and incidents between band members. In 1982, original vocalist Gary Barden, who sang on the first two studio albums The Michael Schenker Group and M.S.G. II as well as the band's third release (the live album One Night at Budokan) was fired in favor of Graham Bonnet (Rainbow, Alcatrazz).

Bonnet lasted one album (Assault Attack) and was fired from the band because he often lost his voice during shows, although the actual firing happened after dropping his pants in a warm-up gig in Sheffield before the Reading Festival. Barden was called by at the last minute and did the show with only a few hours rehearsal and opening the appearance with the words: "surprise surprise". Although many fans proclaimed Assault Attack as being MSGs best recording, Barden was enticed back to the band for Reading (documented on the BBC Radio One Live in Concert) and stayed with M.S.G. for the recording of a new studio album (Built to Destroy) and the band's second live album (Rock Will Never Die).

After Barden's second departure, Schenker reorganized the band around himself and new vocalist Robin McAuley as the McAuley Schenker Group and steered the group to a more commercial hard rock sound. After three albums with the lineup, Schenker and McAuley parted company.

Schenker rejoined UFO for their reunion album Walk on Water. A short tour, punctuated by a fight between Schenker and vocalist Phil Mogg, ended the reunion.

Schenker then resurrected the Michael Schenker Group with all new members and recorded three more albums, The Unforgiven, Written in Sand and Arachnophobiac. The group toured yearly around the United States and Europe.

He later rejoined UFO for two further releases, Covenant and Sharks.

Schenker fell on hard times in the early 2000s after his divorce in which he lost rights to his own music, his Mercedes, and his prized Flying V guitars, which was detailed in an April 2004 interview with Guitar World magazine. He picked himself up and got back to the business of making and performing music, recording the album Arachnophobiac and supporting it with two years of touring.

2005 brought the 25th anniversary of the Michael Schenker Group. Schenker put together a new album of songs called Tales Of Rock'n'Roll to celebrate the anniversary and enlisted singers from each iteration of the band to sing on the album.

After the near-disaster North American and European tours of 2007 which saw cancelled shows and less-than-stellar performances, Michael regained his composure and hit the road in the UK as Michael Schenker & Friends in 2008. Shows in this tour have received rave reviews and show Michael once again at his best. Michael is currently working with Gary Barden, Don Airey, Simon Phillips and Neil Murray on a new MSG album "In The Midst of Beauty" which is scheduled for release in April 2008.

Family

Schenker's son, Tyson Schenker (born May 5, 1984 in London), is a fledgling rock guitarist. He plays a classic Gibson Flying V like his father once did (albeit blue instead of trademark Schenker black and white). He joined his father and uncle Rudolph onstage with Scorpions during the 2006 Wacken Open Air music festival. Tyson's current project is The Audio Cartel, while previously he was a member of the Cambridge UK-based rock band Faster Inferno, which split in 2006.

More recently Dean Guitars produced a Schenker signature Dean V (with subtle differences from the Gibson, but still displaying the split black and white trademark Schenker finish) and Michael now plays Dean guitars almost exclusively.

C'Mule,

Good to hear Barden will be back again, I did not know Schenker lost so much during his divorce. Never knew Aerosmith wanted him either. I did not care for the Robin McCauley era also

Also it was Kelly Keeling, not Kelly Hansen.

Keeling was good, he sang on "The Unforgiven"

Kelly Hansen never sang with Michael, I was wrong....but he would be a good fit. I always liked Hurricane.

Yes he got taken for everything and then I believe that it happened all over again where he made his girlfriend his manager and got ripped off again. My memory is a little weak on that but it is something like that. For a while she continued to rip him off because she had his website and sold things from there. She went from being a saviour to being his demon.

He had a website that explained everything and how he couldn't use his own name. He really seemed to get pretty messed up. As I mentioned, he cancelled two shows that I was going to. After that, there is no way I will travel to see him.

Sounds like a great lineup and would be awesome to see them tour with him but I highly doubt that Don Airey would because his time is pretty taken up by Deep Purple.

I think that the Robin McCauley gets a bum rap and that the record company blew it. I like the first two albums but not the third. They are more commercial and had some potential radio hits on them but the company dropped the ball by not giving proper support. His voice sounded like Robin Zander from Cheap Trick to me. Listen to Perfect Timing again if you haven't in a long time, it may suprise you. Also Save Yourself is worth it just for the title track.

Used to play that in the dressing room before hockey games. That and Jeff Beck's 'It gets Us All In The End." Let's just say that after those two songs, we were ready to run over anything in our way.

I thought it was suprising that he played with two Kelly's. But sounded good to me. Hard to keep track with this guy.

One album that I never heard was/is Schugar/Schenker and a bunch of those solo efforts that were only available from his site for Big bucks. A little pricey for me plus I never knew if he was actually the guy selling or getting money from them.

Good to hear that he seems to be back on track. I know that he was messed up. Mike Varney got tired of him not finishing ARACHNOPHOBIAC and eventually got Jeff Watson from Night Ranger to do some of the leads. he does a great job because it all sounds like Schenker to me.

McCauley did have a good voice, it was just a little less heavy for me, although I did like some of the songs.

Schenker Groups last CD:

Had these vocalist return :
Graham Bonnet, Robin McAuley, Gary Barden, Leif Sundin, and Chris Logan. Included is the Logan-sung Bad Company-esque "Dreams Inside," the Bonnet-sung metallic boogie rocker "Rock n' Roll," the McAuley-sung mainstream rocker "Tell a Story," as well as the album closing instrumental, "Life Goes On," which allows Schenker to stretch out on his Dean Flying V.

You all got me in a Schenker mood today, got a long drive to make, taking these with me

"Written in the Sand"
"Be Aware of Scorpions"
"The Unforgiven"
"Arachnophobiac"
"The Michael Schenker Story"Live"

I Don't have any of the first 5 Schenker's on CD, have them on LP. Need to buy them on CD.

Hey Metal Dudes,

Here is some Kelly Hansen with Hurricane, he would be a nice fit for the MSG.

Here he is with Foreigner:

"Double Vision"

They still sound pretty damn good, Mick Jones looking older..he has that "Dad" look now.

Kelly did a good job taking over for Lou Gramm, I wish Foreigner would do a new studio album with him.

If you click for more info you will see his name is Ray Kennedy...damn I never heard of him.

He's a weird looking dude...bizzare stage action too. Gonna to do some research on him.

Damn he's been around :

Ray Kennedy - Singer - Songwriter - singer for KGB, Jeff Beck, Group Therapy, UFO.

Wrote hits for the ‘Babys’, John Waite, Chicago, Jeff Beck, Fleetwood Mac, Beach Boys, Dave Mason, Englebert Humperdink, Wayne Newton and many more.

Does not have that aerobics look anymore.
