I guess when we think of or mention great songwriters, we always mention Dylan,Young,Paul Simon, and people of that era and time. Those I just mentioned are some of the greats. But the artist's who kinda of emerged over the last 25 years in music, are the ones I want to hear or get opinions on. I have never really a big listener of The Smashing Pumpkins or the Foo Fighters, but hear lately I have picked some of there stuff and I have been really impressed with Billy Corgan and Dave Grohl as far as writing good rock songs on a consistent basis. Are they great..? I am not sure about that , but I do think they are very good and can do it repeatedly.
I think Chris Whitley was a very good songwriter also. He was also very consistent writing quality music.

No finer song-smith than Randall Bramblett!

He and another great songster named Tommy Talton put on a heckuva show Saturday night in Macon!

Ryan Adams
Josh Ritter
Ray Lamontegne
David Gray

PS, i think Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dreams is one of the best albums in the last 20 years.

I think Todd Sheaffer of Railroad Earth is the best songwriter going right now. He has a great combination of catchy melodies and deep, insightful lyrics. "Like A Buddha" and "Seven Storey Mountain" are two of my favorite songs, period.

Instrumental-wise, there is nobody writing better instrumentals than New Monsoon. Some of my favorites of theirs are Mountain Aire, Traveling Gypsies, and Country Interlude.

Thom Yorke from Radiohead. A depressed guy, and a brilliant songwriter.

I absolutely agree 100%!!! His songs are the most honest, soul-searching pieces of art that I have ever heard. Rob, I think me and you would get along
