Dang it hit me hard. I had heard it was around but I got the flu shot and think I'm a relatively healthy individual, so I didn't think much about it.....until I got it.

On Thursday 2.21 I started to really feel allergy like symptoms, sinus drainage etc and by Saturday I could feel it in my lungs...you know, when you cough it comes straight from the lungs and hurts like heck....

Well, I stayed home from work Monday, Tuesday and today and frankly am not feeling too much better.

I've been on Cephalexin (antibiotic 500mg twice a day,) Theraflu and Vicks nighttime cold med.

Been drinking a ton of juice and water but...this flu is still kicking my butt.

Anyone else got it?

What works for you?

I had it a few weekends back. Hit all of a sudden, dizzy, nausea, head cold, coughing. Just sucked

I get a flu shot every year but I also got the flu this year (1st or 2nd week of January) and it hit me exactly like you've described with temp around 101 and kept me in bed for 4 days. Nasty stuff this year! I used aspirin, vicks (cold/flu meds and rubbed into my temples and chest for breathing), mucinex (to attempt to break things up), and ended up getting some meds from my doc but do not remember what. Good luck - main thing is LOT's of clear liquids and rest!

Been a particularly bad year around here, some of you may have seen the thread Ruthie put up about her Sister, and how hard it's been to get her to UAB because of the flu victims.

A side item....vertigo has been particularly bad here of recent, struck two in our office.
It's a virus too, primarily affects the inner ear, otherwise very similar symptoms. But treatment is different.

Main difference in symptoms--with vertigo, there's much dizziness, and vision problems.
Be sure and tell your doc if you have these, as it's easier to knock out if they know what they're dealing with. On the other hand, if you let it go, it takes much longer to fully recover, especially in your vision.

One thing you don't want to take is an antibiotic. Antibiotics are only for bacterial infections, where a flu is a viral infection which antibiotics have no affect on.
Flu meds help ease the pain, but you also dont want to bring your temp all the way down.... it has to be a little hgh so your white blood cells can fight off the infection.
Feel better!

I had it too, was on Cipro for 10 days. This was a really bad strain, I was absolutely down for 5 days. I have only called in sick at work twice in 10 years, and this was one of them. Get well soon.

I used to get the flu pretty bad every year until about 5-6 years ago I started getting a flu shot every year. No more flu for me, but maybe a cold would set me back a few days a year. The flu shot seems very effective for me. A few weeks ago my wife ended up in the emergency room with what was diagnosed as vertigo. Here in Central Jersey there is a lot of bad stuff going around.

I think you get the antibiotic to prevent secondary infections, with your immune system being tied up with the flu

I did not get the flu (fingers crossed), but I have been sick for over a week. Sore throat, cough, stuffed up head, no fever though. Missed two days of work last week. A lot of guys I work with are sick. I also popped a blood vessel in my eye last week (woke up with it), so I am getting some strange stares when I go to see my customers. It has migrated so now it looks like a 1/2 ring around my pupil that is red - really weird. I believe I will eventually have to hit the Dr. man.

cracks me up that they prescribing "Cipro" for secondary infections.....that is what they didnt have enough of to distribute for the anthrax scare a few years back. Once you have had exposure to the strongest antibiotics, you are not in a good position. dont get me started....

anyway, wash your hands - ALOT. the average keyboard contains more germs than a toilet seat in a public bathroom. ick.

I've had it for 2 weeks now. Last week I got surprised with the 24 hour stomach bug on top of the regular flu! Mucinex works pretty well. The doc gave me some steroids and cough suppressant pills yesterday. I am allergic to hydrocodine, so I don't get any of the good stuff...
Lysol is now a permanent smell in my house. It's a pretty day today, so I think a little sunshine and getting out of the house to sit on the porch for awhile may do some good... best of luck!!

Everyone in our family got a version a few weeks ago except (thank God!!) my wife.

Sickest I've felt in a long time except for when I got shingles a few years ago.....shaking chills followed by fever, then repeat, with a nasty headache and bad cough.

At least it wasn't the intestinal version....

I'm still not feeling 100% yet....

Hope you recover soon.

I started to get on 2/14. I missed 2 days of work last week and still have a lingering cough.

I don't know if this was a coincidence but on the 3rd day I made some home made chicken soup. About an hour after I ate it my fever broke

well, the flu has been making it's way around our house in the past week, so far, i've missed it, but man, it has kicked my husband's @ss! seriously! he has tried all kinds of things & nothing seems to completely get rid of it, thus he is getting a little better each day, but not even close to fully. none of us has ever gotten the flu shot because what i have always been told is that it is only effective against one strand & if you come across any other types, well, then you are fair game. i also know a lot of people say that they get sick from the flu shot too. whatever the case may be, whatever is going aound now is pretty rough!
i was unfortunate enough to get mrsa last year...that was the last time i was really sick & i would never wish that on anyone!

anitbiotics don't work on the flu, IT is a virus.

but there are some bacteria based infections going around. antibiotics will help that.
A friend had bad nausea and diarrhea from one of those. Had to go to the ER couldn't
keep any fluids down.

Best thing for a flu virus, other than a flu shot is vitamin C and fluids.

I was coming down with a virus last week, took a couple of doses of "Airborne" and drank
organic OJ and I was right as rain the next day.

"Airborne" is a mixture of herbs and vitamins developed by a teacher of snotty nosed kids.

It worked for me.
