I called Maggie and Henry today to talk about Wanee, and found out that Henry's 85 year old father was found passed away in his bed this morning. All this came on the heels of his mother being admitted last night to the hospital for not feeling well. Henry and Maggie are some of the best people you'd ever want to meet from this website. They are nice folks with sweet kids and my heart is breaking for them. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of Henry's dad. Henry got his musical jones from his dad, who was a jazz pianist.

Thank you so much Dave and everyone else.

Trying to collect some of my thoughts; here are a few-

We had to say an unexpected farewell to my father this morning. He passed away suddenly in his sleep.

My dad Jim was an incredible fellow. He was a great jazz pianist, and inspired me and my brothers to take up music. When I took up the trombone in 6th grade, he was the first cat I ever jammed with. He exposed me to the great big band and jazz artists, and took me to my first big(arena) concert - Frank Sinatra. We also managed to see Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie.

He really had no use for rock & roll; he figured music took a downward turn in 1950 or so. Nevertheless, on the night Jerry Garcia died, he had rushed home early from vacation - and gave my weeping Maggie a big hug. He said, "Oh honey, I know how you feel. I felt this way when Glen Miller died." What a heart that man had. And when I described watching Ron Holloway trading licks with Derek, Warren, and Oteil, he got it; he knew what jamming was, even if it wasn't in his style.

Dad never met a stranger in his life. He'd find something in common with almost everybody he encountered, between his service in the Navy(WWII) and the Air Force, his love of music, trains, and joy for living in general. He had dozens of stories ranging from touching to outrageous. Maggie said he could talk the horns off a billy goat! He loved my Maggie like a daughter. He often referred to her as his daughter. I think he liked her better than me; she said it's because he didn't know her as a teenager!

Losing a loved one is never easy. But the last thing I told my dad last night as I left his house was I love you. Maggie and I firmly believe in telling the people you love every chance you get. Whenever you say goodbye, say I love you. I was telling our daughter how important this is just yesterday morning. I never dreamed we'd live it so suddenly and deeply. She was with me last night; her last words to him were, "I love you, Grandpa."

My mom is holding up surprisingly well. Her main thought is that she had 55 wonderful years with a wonderful man. If you wish to offer any prayers to anyone, please remember her, and pray for her to have the strength to bear this pain.

My other request to all my family here is tell the people you love how you feel. Don't let an opportunity pass by, you truly never know if it will be the last thing you say to someone.

Music is the greatest spiritual and emotionbal healer in my life. I know I'll be sharing this healing with my ABB family in April. I love you all.

Henry,

Your father sounds like he was a very cool person. I would have loved to talk music with him.

My late father in law was a big band trumpet player who once played with Glen Miller when he was still a regional act. He also had his own band and wrote all the arrangements for them. He played me some of his stuff and he had some serious chops.

We spent many wonderful evenings down in his den talking about music. He told me some great stories about his time on the road and though he did not understand rock and roll, he respected it as a former musician and he always encouraged my attempts to play better guitar. I miss him every day. Your eulogy about your father really reminded me of him and brought a tear to my eye.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

My prayers and positive thoughts go out to you, Maggie, and your mother. God bless you all.
