My response to the Op-ed posted on the GB.

It's not like this is some new thing, good marketers have known about this basic approach for years. A good way to sell the product is to tell a compelling story about the product, but a GREAT wayl to sell the product is to tell a compelling story about the customer. Whether you're selling beer, trucks or iPods, the best way to market something is to sell the idea that having this product says something good about you.

It works the same with political views. This isn't an essay about how real men think and act and what they believe, it's about convincing people that by holding certain beliefs and doing certain things, they ARE real men. The litany of things this ideal group does isn't a random sampling, it's actually a very carefully constructed list, aimed at convincing people to hold a certain set of beliefs by suggesting that holding those beliefs gives them other positive traits. Being an upright, honest citizen who looks out for other people and is willing to lay his life on the line for his fellow man is a pretty tall order, but you can fell like one of those guys as long as you hate Hillary Clinton and get all pissed off when you hear "press 1 for English"...that's the message of this piece. Watching football, playing golf and being a jerk to women are all conflated together with knowing how to drill an oil well and being totally self reliant because a lot of guys do the former things, but would like to be seen as having the latter traits as well...they just don't want to actually have to work at those things.

So four million NRA members are going to beat Hillary like a drum that would be 3.3% of the eligible voters? Good luck with those numbers. Maybe he should learn a little math while he is drilling those oil wells.

The actual positive traits listed in the OP aren't specific to "angry white men", but the point is to convince the "angry white man" crowd that there is an easier path to being a pillar of society than actually, you know, being a pillar of society. Like I said, it's marketing 101. You don't sell beer or pickup trucks by talking about how good the beer tastes or how much you can haul in the pickup, you sell them by suggesting that you can be a rough and manly cowboy type if only you drink Coors and buy an F-150...even if you're a software developer. It's by far the best way to sell a product or an idea, offer someone a shortcut to something they want. The whole point of the real American, angry white guy story is to offer character on credit. Yeah, actually BEING a good guy is hard work...so offer people the next best thing.

So did the angry white guy's wife kicked him outta the house? You decide!

Other traits of the angry white man: small penis, bloated beer gut, depressed and lonely wife, and anger management issues. Seriously, the article acts like the angry white man is the foil to all these pansies out there crying "VICTIM", yet he acts like just as much of a victim. The very fact that he calls himself the angry white man is evidence of this, as though he has so much to be angry about. He goes around setting up straw-men to obsess over and bitches about how feminists and homosexuals and immigrants have ruined America and have marginalized him. Whatever, get the over yourself.

The funny thing is how the "angry white man" group is claimed to be pretty inclusive in this article, yet it then turns around and makes all sorts of exclusionary statements about who is and who is not an "angry white man". I mean, what if a man pays his fair share of taxes, works hard and is responsible, but maybe think golf is for pansies who are too out of shape to play real sports? Or what if he can change his own oil and publish a book, but prefers strong, smart women to the brainless, decorative kind? Can he be, like, a probationary angry white man until he gets a beer gut and pretend to enjoy golf or starts dating girls who think it's 1953?

I'm just going to start a competing social group that people can write all sorts of goofy essays about. It's going to be called, "People Who Aren't Complete Tools"...and rather than a raft of silly rules you have to follow to be considered part of the group, there's just going to be one rule, and it's going to be: "Don't be a f*cking tool". I would add a second rule that excludes "angry white men", but I think the first rule pretty much covers that.

Well, like my grandpa used to say, "Son, it's not whether you touch bottom, it's whether you touch both sides."

I have a really "big" biker friend named Henry who put it best. It may not be big but I have 300 pounds backing it up. Now here is a white guy who was not angry about it but figured out a way to improvise. Please feel free to use that line, it worked for him and he would not mind.

Ruth, my word!

Can you support Sen Clinton, not own a gun and still be an angry white man? Nevermind, I answered my own question there.

Well if you can be a "miffed" white woman at goof ball Op-ed's, own two guns, not be a member of the NRA and support Hillary, I guess anything is possible.

Thanks Ruth!

Our friend that posted that also doesn't understand taxes. Here was his response to me:

"What was posted was EARNED income from say your job, not your investment."

Which is meaningless. Most people pay taxes on their income + investment income - deductions - called net income.

As an example between the difference betwen 1999 and today......

Since I am over 50, I can contribute 15,500 to my 401K, plus $5000 catch up. My wife, who also was working, can contribute $15,500. That is all pre-tax, so we could basically remove $35,500 from our combined income that we would not pay tax on. Somebody in the $50,000 income range could not afford to put all that money into a 401K and still pay the bills, unless they had a lot in savings. I am not "wealthy", but I can shelter more money from taxes than others with less income. I do not remember what 401K limits were in 1999, or if there was even a pre-tax option. So let's say it was $10,000 max. So in his example, someone making $125,000 in 1999 could shelter an extra $15,000, and their taxable income would be $110,000 today (all else being equal).

My point was that there are many ways to look at the tax code - and just looking at the tables doesn't tell the whole story. How you get to the taxable income number has also changed. Saying it is just based on earned income from a paycheck is not looking at the whole picture.

He's not going to bully me into his position by just saying that what he thinks is the only way to look at things....
