I don't know when I first heard this saying, but it seems like I'm hearing it more and more and frankly do not like it.

"It is what it is"

Do you like it?

Can we figure out how to hasten it's demise?

That would depend on what your definition of "is" is.

From Urban Dictionary

It is what it is
171 up, 17 down

A cliche, popular within the circles of coaches, business execs, and those of us who just want to say "It's happened. 'I'm going to forget about it. I'm going to move on. There is nothing that can be done about it."

Voted by USA Today as the #1 cliche of 2004

"We showed up and gave 100%, and it is what it is." NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson, after finishing second in the Nextel Cup championship. (AP, Nov. 22)

"Never in a million years did I think we would be 1-5 at this juncture, but it is what it is." Mike Minter, safety for the NFL's Carolina Panthers, on his team's start this season. (AP, Oct. 24)

Is this a better game than before? That's what a lot of people are asking. Perhaps the more precise question should be: Is this what hockey is going to evolve into? And if so, will the fans, the players, the coaches, and the general managers embrace it as NHL hockey?
"It is what it is," said Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock. "It's a new game." (

Or, the ever-present, "you know what I'm saying?"

Here's an idea, unless I say I don't understand you, I know what you're saying, and you need not ask that question over and over. This expression is little more than umm or ahh.

SAME DIFFERENCE!

I actually like "it is what it is",it reminds me to practice acceptance,& my level of acceptance of things that I can't change is directly proportional to my serenity.

A similar phrase...

H.I.: Nathan Jr accepts me for what I am! And I think you better had, too! You know I'm okay, you're okay! That there's what it is!

"It is what it is" is what Mike Callahan signed on the the Tarpon Zoo t-shirt I won in the Fence Fund raffle. I feel like he knew what was comin' up, and that was how he saw it.

Miss you, Mike. Wanee won't be quite the same without an appearance from you.

edit: raffle, not auction.

I've been using it for 10 years in construction, I like and means just that. We will have a site conditions that we don't like, but "it is what it is", there is nothing you can do change it, so deal with it, come up with a Plan B.

"You know what I'm saying?"

Check this out for a sort of hilarious look at that by Weird Al interviewing Eminem:

For further hilarity, see the other AL TV celebrity interviews on youtube...funny stuff.

I find it annoying at times especially if I don't like the "is" part! Now about that what's done is done...
