Watching the pre Daytona 500 show and Chubby Checker is so obviously lip syncing it is sickening.

Is anyone OK with lip syncing ? At any time?

I'm not a fan of lip syncing at all. Not to sound racist or anything, but when's NASCAR gonna realize the average fan doesn't care about these R & B/Soul people.

EDIT: WOOO Brooks and Dunn! GIT R DONE!!!

I didn't see the show, but here's a thought: Chubby's heyday was about 48 yrs ago, be glad that he's lip-syncing

Anyone who has ever tried to mix live sound, especially in a setting like the Daytona 500 knows that it's a nightmare and the best way to make the performance possible for a television feed is to prerecord the music. In that case, I'm okay with it.....at a concert where someone has paid for a live performance.... it better be a live performance!

It is always OK, when you're on American Bandstand. Chubby used to lip sync on that show, as did all of the other performers! They would stand there holding guitars and pretend to play even. But, hey, we got to "see" them.

Chubby Checker has earned his right to lip sync.

Otherwise I am generally opposed to it.

Somehow, in the context of NASCAR, lip-syncing does not offend me much.

imo...never. There is no circumstance where lip synching is acceptable. Ever. Its unthinkable.

Not that I'd wish suicide upon anyone, but I wish after the Ashlee Simpson SNL fiasco, she'd have disapeared

Holt, Percy ain't lip syncing. I know his drummer and we've talked about this very subject. Percy's voice has lost a lot of it's range and depth, and the comment that his drummer made was that he wished Percy would lip sync because on may nights he ain't got it.
As to Ann's post, it is extremely hard to sing in conditions such as The Daytona 500. The PA is arrayed in a 360 degree configuration, so you're hearing multiple reflections arriving at different times even if you use in-ear monitors. It is similar to the effect that you get when you call in to a radio show and leave your volume turned up on your radio. You talk and 3 seconds later you hear yourself. Some performers can do it, others can't.

I don't really care for lipsynching, but it is necessary some of the time, (see Big Ann's post). This definitely is one of those times.

Live TV events are one thing...

The whole "Britney Spears"/"Madonna" type thing is a whole other issue. But I've been realizing lately, that these kinds of performances are not really something to compare to the music I like to hear "live". They are just performances, not live music. The dancing (and believe me you can't do some of that dancing and sing very well!) is part of the "performance" and part of what people are going to see... I personally could care less, but that is what it's all about.

It is never ok. It is musical fraud.

I believe this is part of what led Britney Spears to where she is. Everyone put her on a musical pedestal making her a godess. She could do nothing wrong and made millions of dollars and recieves more attention than Jesus Christ.

Problem is all she is is a glorified lip syncer. Now that everyone has caught on to that there is no reason to go see her live shows or give her music any credence. She is a lip syncer that can do some choreographed dance moves. Unless she somehow starts singing live during her performances if she performs again I believe her music career is finished.

The lip synching is bad, but the amazing thing is the faking on the instruments. Funny to hear a piano or horns when there are none on stage.

Does anyone remember when John Mellencamp was on American Bandstand performing "Ain't Even Done With The Night"? He was still going by Cougar then. That was so funny, when the guitar solo came up his guitarist was playing a Mandolin! They were all playing acoustics and the drummer just had a snare. They were really having fun making goofy faces while they were acting like they were playing.

"sixty8" brought up a very interesting point. Britney Spears and Milli Vinilli both lip-synced, and it was career suicide for both of them. Think about how it must really feel, to be in the "biz", but not able to rub elbows with "real" musicians without them knowing that you are nothing but a sham, a fraud. That's gotta be a huge ego-buster..........I mean, look at what's happened to Britney, and as I said earlier, one of the Milli Vinilli guys ended up offing himself. I remember when Britney Spears could easily sell out a 20,000 seat arena right here in San Jose. It's gotta be one hell of a guilt trip to know that you were taking money from all those 10 to 16 year olds, and all you were doing was dancing in a skimpy outfit while lyp-synching.
