The first year of this post will be 1964. I know thats not normally considered a Classic Rock year but there are some gems out there from this great year.

In this year The Beatles made the Billboard charts for the 1st time

February 1 - Indiana Governor Matthew E. Welsh declares the song "Louie, Louie" by the Kingsmen pornographic. He requests that the Indiana Broadcasters Association ban the record. Governor Welsh claimed that hearing the song made his "ears tingle." Publisher Max Firetag offers $1,000 to anyone that can find anything "suggestive" in the song's lyrics.

February 9 - The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, which breaks television ratings records.

March 14 - Billboard Magazine reports that sales of Beatle records make up 60% of the entire singles market.

April 4 - The Beatles occupied all five top positions on Billboard's Hot 100 with their singles "Can't Buy Me Love", "Twist and Shout", "She Loves You", "I Want to Hold Your Hand", and "Please Please Me".

August 26 - The Kinks release their iconic single "You Really Got Me".

December 11 - Sam Cooke is killed under mysterious circumstances in Los Angeles, California. Shortly thereafter, "A Change Is Gonna Come," a song considered by many to be his best, is released.

The MC5 formed this year

Some Note able Album Releases

# 12 x 5 - The Rolling Stones
# The Animals (US Album) - The Animals (contains the classic house of the rising sun)
# A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles
# The Kinks - The Kinks
# The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones

Some Classic Singles
Do Wah Diddy- Manfred Man
The House of the Rising Son- The Animals
I Get Around- The Beach Boys
I'm Into Something Good- Herman's Hermits
A World Without Love- Peter & Gordon

#1 Beatles Songs and weeks at #1
I Want To Hold Your Hand for 7 weeks (Feb 1- Mar 14) just to be knocked off by She Loves You (march 21-28) to be knocked off by Cant By Me Love (April 4- May 2) knocked of by Louis Armstrong's Hello Dolly. Next Beatles #1 was Love Me Do for one week (may 30). Two months later A Hard Days Night went #1 for two weeks (Aug 1- Aug 8) Then to end the year I Feel Fine went #1 (Dec. 26) To me the fact they had 6 #1 singles in one year is amazing most bands don't get that in there career.

1964-Moog invented the synthesizer and Dylan got the Beatles high on Pot. Not sure which had a bigger affect on music?

I was 12 and watched all three Ed Sullivan shows W/THE BEATLES

Petula Clarks "Downtown" was monster hit as well...
