when it comes to singin' sad songs there are three that stand above the rest IMHO:

Gregg Allman
Ray Charles
Bonnie Raitt

I know there are others..........Susan is not to shabby either.

"I am an old woman............"

"mostly shades of grey......."

Weird! WXPN is playing duets all day and right now John Prine and Bonnie Raitt are singing Angel From Montgomery

'Go Rest High on that Mountain' by Vince Gill, written for his brother. Backup vocals by Patty Loveless and Ricky Scaggs. This song makes me cry every time I hear it.

In all seriousness, The Baby by Blake Shelton tears me out the frame every time I hear it. It reminds me of my mother.

I've only been in Carolina a few times, but "Hickory Wind" is one of the sadder things I've heard. The yearning to be home again.

Then again, Gram Parsons had many songs like this.

Here's one I can't hear without crying:

He Walked on Water....Randy Travis

He wore starched white shirts buttoned at the neck,
and he'd sit in the shade and watch the chickens peck.
And his teeth were gone, but what the heck,
I thought that he walked on water.

He said he was a cowboy when he was young.
He could handle a rope and he was good with a gun.
And my mama's daddy was his oldest son,--
and I thought that he walked on water.

CHORUS

If the story's told, only heaven knows.
But his hat seemed to me like an old halo.
And although his wings, they were never seen.
I thought that he walked on water.

Then he tied a cord to the end of a mop,
and said, "Son, here's a pony, keep her at a trot."
And I'd ride in circles while he laughed alot.
Then I'd flop down beside him.

And he was ninety years old in sixty-three
and I loved him and he loved me.
And lord, I cried the day he died,

'cause I thought that he walked on water.

"William" by Chris Knight is so sad there are times I can't listen to it. "Sam Stone" by John Prine "Dark End of the Street", "It Tears Me Up" & "Cry Like A Man" by Dan Pen, "El Cherrito Place" by Keith Gattis.

This list could go on for weeks....I'm a sucker for a sad song.

Bonnie Raitt - Angel From Montgomery, I Can't Make You Love Me, Dimming of the Day
Bonnie & Alison Krauss - You (Isn´t it love that keeps us breathing...)
Alison Krauss - Ghost In This House
Chrissie Hynde & Pretenders - I'll Stand By You, Thin Line Between Love and Hate
Stevie Wonder - Stay Gold (maybe more nostalgic than sad)
Leon Russell - This Masquerade
Mama's & Papa's - California Dreaming

etc. etc

Have you heard the cover Blake did of Conway's "Goodbye Time"?

Sad as can be.

Anything by Billie Holliday. Even happy songs sound sad when she sings them.

Chet Atkins doing “I Still Can’t Say Goodbye”.

We learned how to play this song and still can't get through it. I can't watch this without having a roll of Bounty nearby. Dad died eighteen years ago and I still miss him every day. He was the only role model I ever needed, the epitome of The Greatest Generation.

Free Fallin by Tom Petty

The thought of anyone talking about not missing their daughter I find sad.
