Hey Folks !

This is Part III of my Concert show Tributes, We did Ed Sullivan, Midnight Special, and now Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. You will see that some of the videos do not have the picture and sound as good as the other 2 tributes. Thats because a lot of these were taken from VHS tapes..thank goodness somone taped these great performances. I was thrilled to find some old Sparks, Mahogoney Rush, Early Marshall Tucker, Rory Gallagher, and all the rest. Not as many acts as the other 2 tributes, but some great stuff...oh yeah...Johnny Winter also.YEEEEAHHH !!!.

If any shows don't match up to the video, please let me know so I can fix it. I did this one fast. I have spent the whole day doing this trio of rock shows and entertainment. For you my Friends. Now I can sit back and enjoy them myself

Don Kirshner 2007

Don Kirshner's Rock Concert was a television music variety show that ran during the 1970s and early 1980s, created and produced by Don Kirshner and syndicated to television stations. It premiered on September 27, 1973 with a performance by the Rolling Stones; its last episode was in 1981.

Kirshner had been executive producer and "creative consultant" on ABC's "In Concert" series which debuted with two shows in November and December 1972 in the 11:30 p.m. time slot usually held by the Dick Cavett Show. The programs, taped at the Hofstra Playhouse at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., featured performances by Alice Cooper, Curtis Mayfield, Seals & Croft, Bo Diddley, the Allman Brothers, Chuck Berry, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Poco. Their rating more than doubled the average rating of the Cavett show and even topped NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in some markets.

"In Concert" became a bi-weekly series in January 1973. "Right now, we have more artists than we know what to do with," Kirshner's music director Wally Gold told the Washington Post late in 1972. "We pay them scale to appear, which is way below what they usually get for a concert, but they know that the publicity is well worth it. So everyone wants to be on. We're getting hundreds of calls. At first, we had to beg the artists to appear. Now they're begging us."

In September 1973, Kirshner left "In Concert" -- he received producing credits for three more shows -- to launch his own syndicated "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert." The premier, on September 27, 1973, featured the Rolling Stones, taped in London, in their first appearance on American TV in more than four years.

The program featured many of the popular performers of the day during its run. Other notable guests included the Eagles, Foghat, Kansas and The Allman Brothers Band.

The show was hosted by Kirshner up till the last season. His on-air delivery was described as flat by viewers; Paul Shaffer would often lampoon him in a convincing impersonation on Saturday Night Live. In its final season, the show was hosted by Kirshner's son and daughter.

The show was noted for featuring musical acts performing live, which was unique since most television appearances during the era showed performers lip-synching to prerecorded music.

Another great one Kenny, I have bookmarked all 3 of your posts on this to go back and watch as I have time.

Starz, Pull The Plug, Atlanta boys! Saw there free concert at The Fox when they first came out, 96 Rock put it on, I worked as an usher for a while in the Fox and saw this one, ended up on the front row by the end of the show as there were hardly and people there by the end. Did you know there lead singer is John Schendier's (sp) from Dukes of Hazzards brother? I remember he put a champagne bottle between his legs, popped the cork and started humping and trying to spray the ladies in the front row. Too much!

He had another Brother name Rex Smith...who had a rock band called "Rex", they were good...then Rex turned into a teen Heart Throb and started doing wimpy music.

Check out this clip(Below) of the singer from Starz now....he does not even look like the same Dude(He's put on those pounds like a lot of us). Of course I don't look like I did in the 70's either. I had all of Starz albums. They had one called "Coliseum Rock" that was great.

I was in the audience for both the Fleetwood Mac & New York Dolls tapings.

On the same bill with the New York Dolls was Dr. John, The Ohio Players, & The Stylistics.

The only other band I recall with Fleetwood Mac was Blue Swede.

Also went to a Kirshner taping with Linda Ronstadt, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, & Steve Martin

They all were taped in August & September 1974.

What got aired from that Fleetwood Mac show was:

Green Manalishi
Bermuda Triangle
Spare Me A Little Of Your Love
Black Magic Woman
Rattlesnake Shake

But, they actually played a full set during the taping.

About 10-15 years ago they started rerunning episodes. I've got several VHS tapes loaded with performances that I taped. I can recall Black Oak Ark. cracking me up with their lead singer strutting around with these painted on pants doing Jim Dandy.
