Sorry if this has been discussed before! I was wondering who wrote this wonderful song? (my guess being Oteil) And why did it stay in the repertoire for effectively only a year? (excluding the occasional Beacon appearance) It's such a great jam vehicle and I'd love to hear it more!

I do think Oteil wrote it...or at least co-wrote it.

Oteil, far as I know.

I also believe (based on my ears, not some insider info) that Egypt is based on "Walk Like a Man" that the ABB played a few times in 2000...written by Oteil.

Egypt sounds like Walk Like a Man without the vocals.

Didn't Warren and Oteil write Egypt? Or maybe I'm confused with Instrumental Illness......

Countt me as someone who loves this tune!!!! If they ever get around to producing one again, this song BELONGS on the next album.

Someone made a great point on this board that some sort of slow groove bass solo should be added to the middle portion, which I completely agree with. Let Oteil shine, baby!!!!

Warren said that "Egypt" was written by Oteil. But he didn't really clarify if there was any co-writing on it.

I personally have loved this song from day one. One of my all-time fav instrumentals (I know that's saying a lot). It definitely needs to be recorded and released if the band ever does a new album.

It definitely comes from "Walk Like a Man" which was only played twice in 2000, which was solely written by Oteil. He didn't like the lyrics, so it popped back up as "Egypt" in 2005. But there are many more parts in "Egypt" that aren't in "Walk Like a Man" and then of course there are no lyrics in "Egypt", yet there are in "Walk Like a Man".

As to why they didn't play it last year and hardly at all in 2006... My only guess is that with the shortened tours the last 2 summers that they were just trying to keep a regular rotation of "hits" material, with some new covers occassionally thrown in. 2001-2005 they really mixed up the sets and added new songs both covers and originals and I think they just wanted to try doing a "please the casual fan" run. This seems to be at the disgust of a lot of people here and some of the hard core fans, but to the casual ABB fans I know who have seen them have enjoyed the last 2 years more than any other year since 1989.

I certainly hope it gets brought back into rotation.

Thanks for that info, sounds very reasonable. I hope so too

It may be a case of someone not liking the song very much so it never gets added to the setlist. That is the case with why some others never got played.

Just speculation on my part.

Yeah, I had thought of that too. I hope that isn't the case though because I love it.

It's a fantastic song, and one of my favorite instrumentals in the ABB arsenal. The 4/16/05, 7/24/05 and 10/1/05 versions are all strong, and all very different.

I'd sure love to hear it come back this year!

I don't like it that much. In my opinion, it lacks the melodiousness of tunes like Jessica, IMOER, MJ, Whipping Post or any of the other classics. I would rather hear Jessica or MJ any day of the week. Just my opinion.

I love Egypt. It seems Warren's recent solos in Whipping Post, are very similar to what he did in Egypt, starting with a slower melodic feel and then going into more of the hard edge jam in three. A lot of elements of the jam in Egypt seemed to come from other songs like WP and Nobody Knows (which also had that WP like jam). The theme and middle sequence are all Oteil. I wish they would work on that some more and add it to the regular rotation.

I've always heard shades of Nobody Knows in Warren's solo's in Eqypt, and things similar to how Derek approached JJ's Alley for his Egypt solo....plus the obvious overall song based on 2000's Walk Like a Man.

I really like this one - would love to hear it back in the rotation.

i hear what your'e sayin' Jim. there's an epic, tidal quality as it builds in intensity. reminds me of the way Nobody Knows used to develop.

i think i'll just play the versions i have back-to-back-to-back. wheee! let's clean house. (no, really) BTW, feel free to PM me re: what jennifer and i were talking about regarding education towards a particular career interest. i talked it over with beth, and if i remember correctly, i'd just reiterate what i said in atl.

I'm glad so many people like this song. I was expecting more posts like the one Dougrhon made. Which I understand. Although I obviously love "Jessica" & "Liz Reed", since they are in the pile of songs that made me love the band in the first place. A lot of those instrumentals are based on 2 chord jams with melodies around it. Sometimes with some sort of modulation. But I disagree that Egypt doesn't have enough melody. The whole intro main theme has several repeating melodies played in harmony on guitar. And THEN for the solos, each of Warren's & Derek's solos, are played over a different chord vamp and each of those split half-way through with a different chord progression. And on top of that some of those progression have several chords, as oppossed to the 2 chord progressions found in many of the other jams. I find that so exciting. Plus as mentioned is so many of the versions are very different (which I guess can be said about all of their music). Anyway, I think I better go listen to it now.

PS I think my favorite version is 10/1/05.
