What is one to do when all that they ever enjoyed becomes work?

I know what you mean. I turned my hobby into my supplement income, which is buying and selling guitars. I found myself typing more than playing guitar after a while, and it became a task answering a bunch silly questions. It became work.

But not looking at work as a bad thing is the key. Toiling is one thing, but working at something you love is another.
if you look at your "work" (and I mean your hobby) as pleasurable, and a means at getting better at your love, then your good.

maybe step a way from it a bit for a while might help.

I guess the only hobby that never really becomes work is masterbation
sorry...it came to me, and I had to type it.

Trading shows got to be that way with me. Mostly because I would get carried away and want to send more disc than I was supposed to. I have not traded in quite some time. I have some friends here who still send me shows from time to time. I try to send them something in return.
I still have not played all the shows I have. Probably never will. Sometimes I want to give them away to folks here and then I think I would miss them if I did.

If anything ever happens to me, I have asked my Brother in law or Daughter to come here and give them away. No one else in my family would ever listen to them.

I used to collect Horror magazines, but they got to expensive.

Only collecting I do now it some music and DVD's. I just about have all the classic rock music that I could want.

it seems like, more times than not, hobbies becaome a hassel when you end up pissing some yay-who off by accident or for no apparent reason (or by no fault of your own) and then before you know it you have some kind of enemy who has taken it WAY to personal and makes his/her sole goal in life to make your life miserable...

"Dude, I know you sent me those three awesome shows and everything, but on that last show you cut the encore short on disk III - WHAT IS UP WITH THAT!!!!!!!"

-but I was doing you a favor, I even spent my own money on postage.

"....WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOUR OPINION SUX, ANDTHE MUSIC YOU LIKE IS EVEN SUKIER..."

-but I thought music taste is an individual person's choice, a personal preferance.

"...Man, I know you fixed my guitar for me and all, but it still don't sound right, you aint worth a crap..."

-yeah, but I did'nt charge you anything and you did'nt want to spend any money for new pick-ups...

"F^ck you f^cker, that f^cking motorcycle wont f^cking crank and run for two f^n seconds and I ain't even f^n rode it since you sold it to me"

-even though I rode it everyday and it ran GREAT(hell, its a Yamaha/Star...it doesnt require MUCH maintenance) - did you ever think the gas/fuel has gone bad cause you failed to winterize it LIKE THREE YEARS AGO when I sold it to you?!

I could continue, but undoubtedly I will upset someone in here and then posting here (another "hobby" of mine) will get shot all to hell too.

I am just now taking a break from playing in the church band (as a volunteer) for the past ten years. After our last band leader (the only paid band member) resigned in September, I began to give serious consideration to leaving. But two other long standing band members resigned before I did, and to keep it from appearing there was a mass exodus over the leader's resignation (long story behind that,) I stayed in. The last couple of months have been difficult, at best, to enjoy. My heart hasn't been in it, and despite my repeated attempts to let others know I was ready for a break, I just had to go one and make the break, even though there's not another bass player lined up. In the end, I feel OK about it because I was asked for a one year commitment of time. It turned into ten. Not a bad run....

From about 1973 to 79, I was a real avid scuba diver, and belonged to 2 dive clubs, one in my hometown Waukegan, il and another in Wisconsin where i went to college. I went on anywhere from 8 to 10 dives a year over that 6 year period including ice diving about 5-6 times. The majority of my dives were on wrecks off Door County in Lake Michigan.

If you look at a map of the US Door county is the little peninsula sticking off Wisconsin that sticks into Lake Michigan. There are several hundred wrecks off that tip of the peninsula all within a 10-15 mile boat ride.

Anyway I got to the point where while I loved diving I just got burned out with all the weekend driving. Usually come monday morning I'd be so tired it would take a couple days to recover. Plus it started getting expensive. I did miss diving though.

I can afford to do it now and I have given some thought to taking a refresher and getting recertified. But I am also doing a total remodel job on my house (doing all the work myself) over the next year so I most likely will wait until I finish that.

Wow... I am glad to hear someone else say that. It got to be too tough to trade. I haven't traded in a while and when I rarely do, I usually warn someone that I'll probably be a bit slow. (well, depending on when it comes up, if I instigate the trade, I'm usually much quicker!)

Listening to music is one of my hobbies. I must be getting bored. I haven't listened to one song since Saturday 1/19/08. Need some new stuff. Any suggestions? the ipod has not moved in over a week.

Have you heard this great double album called "At Fillmore East?" Never grows old to me.

Isn't there some kind of weed that hobbits enjoy smoking? I hear it mellows then out and keeps them out of your hair therefore less hassle.

So, if I'm picking up what you're putting down, then what you are trying to tell me is:

Hobbits with a hashish hobby are no hassle ? !

something tells me even hobbits feel hassled when they have to go "make a run" for their hobbit buddies when they themselves still have plenty from the last time they made "the run".

Hence the hobbit is hassled by his hobby. Dragon or no dragon, the hobby is draggin him down !
