I'm not a big Jam Band fan ( I don't consider ABB a jam band) but would like to include a CD from Widespread Panic and Phish in my collection. What would you recommend?

Widespread Panic's first three albums are a must me thinks....

any early phish would be a good idea. a litte eclectic but still alot of fun, "Picture of Nectar" is amazing. "Rift" is a dreamlike concept album. "Junta" is classic Phish. plus any shows from '93and'94 are recommended. later Phish just get's monotonous and boring.

For phish I'd say the best thing to start off with is the Hampton Comes Alive set, its a great 6 cd box set that can be pretty pricey if you buy it from some place like best buy. I'd look for it in your local used cd store, a much better deal. Phish and panic are usually lumped together but they're very different bands. Panic is much....louder. Trey Anastasio (Phish's lead guitarist) plays incredibly beautiful lines. He sometimes evokes Hendrix (in my opinion). Phish is often quite quirky, which can be amusing. They often do such things as play the Andy Griffith theme song. It just makes you giggle the first time you hear it. Panic is a great, solid band, they're just more normal. I'd start with Don't Tell the Band, a great album. Then I'd go with Live in the Classic City. Hope this helps.

i'm not much of a phish fan anymore, but Phish's "Live One" may be one of my favorite live cds of all time. Ahhhh.... that reminds me of the summer of 95! Lots of stems and caps up in the mountains that summer!

I never listened to Phish until two weeks ago, when I got the 8/9/98 show in a trade, but there's a lot of jazzy playing by Trey. On one song in particular, I think it's Birds of a Feather, he takes a two to three minute solo that blew my mind and gave me chills. To me, his playing on that reminded me of Jimmy Herring and Jerry Garcia. I'll have to listen to him more.....
