My daughter 's school is closed today due to lake effect snow...not earth shattering news but makes me think back to being a kid and the fun we had whenever there was a snow day. The excitement of hearing your schools name on the closings list over the radio was a high that couldn't be matched however, the extreme excitement of having a snow day paled in contrast to the utter disappointment experienced while listening to that same radio in the morning and not hearing your schools name and knowing that school was not going to be closed. That really sucked...

Ah, the memories......It was always nice when in elementary school and junior high. Unfortunately, when in high school, I was required to still attend wrestling practice at some point in the day. It was nice to get out of class, but knowing you still had to go into that dungeon like practice room was never exactly a great feeling. Funny that now, working in a school, I still feel the same excitement watching the television at 6:00 AM just waiting to see if we're delayed or closed. It's also interesting that I still am required to show up even if closed. Nice that it isn't until 10:00 AM instead of the usual 8:00 AM, however.

I LOVED snow days as a kid!!! Still do (but don't get them nearly enough...)

I was suprised when I first moved near Ottawa. They don't seem to cancel school here but they do cancel the buses which amounts to the same thing.

No kids go to school except for the few unlucky ones whose parents bring them. Likely parents that work and have no other option. They take the handful and put them together and make them watch movies all day. I did it once years ago to my daughter and she begged me to never make her do that again.

Strange setup.

You are either the "bad" parent who doesn't make their kids go to school.

The 'bad" parent that forces the kids to go even though 95% of the other kids don't go.

The parent that drove their kids in conditions that the school board deemed too bad for a large bus. Which is a bad choice.

It gets too complicated for me. so just stay home.

Not like they learn anything that day anyway. Or any other it seems.

I had a few snow days when I was in school, and I would always enjoy them. I remember when we had the blizzard in 1979, and I was out of school for a few days.

Well, we had three districts out of the six that send students here close today. Place is awfully quite without those students in the building. Of course, the students from the other three districts are pissed they didn't close. Most of them anyway.

Perhaps you can dig out an old "Uncle Smiley" movie from the AV Dept. and let the kids watch it backwards

This reminds me of a time back in college - we were sitting around the dorm enjoying a snow day and I asked a friend of mine, who was from Lima, Peru if they ever got snow days back home. His response??? "No, but sometimes we'd get time off because of a revolution."

Not making it up.
