Good for Ringo !!!!!!!!!!

Ringo walks off `Regis' over song flap

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer Tue Jan 22, 2:31 PM PST

Ringo Starr is known for being the amiable Beatle, but the rock star showed his tough side Tuesday when he walked off the set of "Live With Regis and Kelly" rather than cut short one of his songs.

Starr, who is promoting his new album, "Liverpool 8," planned to perform the title song with fellow rocker Dave Stewart. However, due to miscommunication between his publicist, Elizabeth Freund, and the musical director, Starr didn't realize the performance had to be 2 1/2 minutes or less, Freund told The Associated Press.

When told Tuesday morning that the performance had to be shortened, Freund said Starr tried to cut about a minute of the song's 4 minute, 15 second length, down to 3 minutes and 30 seconds. However, according to Freund, producer Michael Gelman said it had to be less than 3 minutes.

"We offered to cut back our chat time and asked them to fade or go to commercial. They were not willing to do that and Ringo was not willing to cut it further, so without a compromise we were not able to stay," Freund said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Ringo left saying, `God bless and goodbye. We still love Regis.'"

A spokeswoman for "Regis and Kelly" disputed some of Freund's contentions. The representative, who declined to be named -- citing show policy -- told the AP the show's producers tried to work with Starr. The spokeswoman also said the time of his song was almost 5 minutes, not 4 minutes and 15 seconds. She also said that his appearance had been booked since November and that Starr's representatives had agreed to the time requirement for the song.

With Starr absent, fashion designer Michael Kors and the winners of CBS' "The Amazing Race" did extra segments to fill his time.

Despite Tuesday's drama, she said the show would absolutely welcome Starr back.

However, Stewart had plenty of criticism for the show, calling it "disrespectful treatment of us as artists."

"Four minutes (3 minutes and 40 seconds, actually) seemed like an appropriate amount of time for a former Beatle. Mr. Gelman apparently felt Ringo's musical legacy should take a back seat to additional banter about the size of Ms. (Kelly) Ripa's derriere," he said in a statement.

The spokeswoman for "Regis and Kelly" said there would be no comment on Stewart's statement.

Starr, 67, shortened his song for CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," but it was still over 3 minutes, Freund said.

But he was able to play the full song later Tuesday on "Rachael Ray."

"Ringo taped an interview and performance on our show this afternoon, which was absolutely amazing. He performed `Liverpool 8' in its entirety ... and was a complete professional and a pleasure to work with," said Charlie Dougiello, a spokesman for Ray.

Good for him! It sounds like the Regis show was asking for the Cliff notes version of the Ringo/Dave tune and I don't blame them for not wanting to compromise their music to suit some talking head.

Reminds me of a Lucinda Williams Today Show appearance.

The producers wanted her to omit a line from "The Way You Move"

She said it stays or we leave.

She did the whole song.

I love Lucy!

I have nothing against Regis and Kelly, but Gelman is turtle dick with ears, so this doesn't surprise me. Still, if Ringo's performance would have been anything like the one a week or so ago on the CBS Early Show, we didn't miss much. His new song sucked, mind-numbingly repetitive and pedestrian at best, his band is blatantly mediocre, and his singing wasn't the best either. Ringo was the right drummer at the right time for the Beatles, but he was so the weak link of that great quartet, and he doesn't have Geoge around anymore to right good material for him. If he wasn't a Beatle, this new music would drop like a lead balloon, and it still might.

If you gotta 4 minute song, play at least 4 minutes. TV is getting to really suck with there prescribed time slots for music. All hail Johnny Carson !

I agree with the shoutout to Johnny carson back in the day. I have a video tape somewhere of Goerge Benson sounding great and playing THREE songs on the Tonight Show- played one song, talked to Johnny, then after the commercial went out anmd played two more numbers. This was back when the Tonight Show was 90 minutes per evening. Wow, I guess we're getting to the point when a whole generation doesn't really know what we're talking about here concerning Carson. Crazy.

The Allman Brothers performed a lengthy True Gravity on Carson w/ Doc sitting in on trumpet- there used to be a video of it on youtube but I can no longer find it. It was very well done and Doc was the man, as was Johnny.

Regis is the Eggman, koo-koo-kachoo

kick ass,Ringo--music takes precedence--they should be happy a BEATLE would even do tv--look at what Paul & Ringo endure---Regis,the blonde idiot with him,Larry King...have mercy..Ringo's a good man for even showing up & then they shave his song down--i don't care if he drools--he'll be more entertaining & intelligent than the likes of regis, kelly, larry,& the other strange people who rule tv today--where is CARSON when we need him!!??
...& it would be nice to see the ABB with Doc--a fine nite of music--where is that darn clip!!?..ole Carson really was into it too...rollin those famous Carson pencils--these dudes knew how to conduct themselves with & had respect for musicians...Carson was a bit of a drummer & a jazz freak...love ya Ringo

Good for Ringo....

I remember Chuck Berry being on The Tonight Show and Chuck got the audience and Johnny so fired up, he was the only guest that night....

Somewhere I have a VHS of that show....

What amazes me is that all these talk shows waste 15-20 minutes talking about crap. Cut you monologue for 2 minutes on the one show. Tell one less story about Regis or Kelly's life and it fits. Not like you have a Beatle on every day or anyone that could be a much more interesting interview.

Hell make the entire show a Beatle theme in Tribute to Ringo.

Glad he walked because it is insulting in my opinion.

The best part is that he got far more press from not playing than he would have otherwise.
