My favorite Drummer of all time, for over 35 years.

BILL BRUFORD:

William Scott Bruford (born May 17, 1949 in Sevenoaks, Kent, England), better known as Bill Bruford, is an influential British drummer who is recognised for his forceful, highly precise, polyrhythmic style. He was the original drummer for the highly successful progressive rock group Yes, and has been a prominent figure in the art rock movement since the early 1970s. He has been in many other bands and collaborated on numerous projects, most famously King Crimson and his own fusion band Bruford.

He began playing the drums when he was thirteen, and was influenced by jazz drumming, which would manifest itself on early Yes albums and would remain an influence on his style throughout his career. He had success in the early seventies during his time with Yes playing on their first five albums including the LPs The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge. He left Yes at the height of their success in 1972, returning briefly for the Union album which was released in 1991.

And my all time Favorite Metal Drummer:

DAVE LOMBARDO

Dave Lombardo (born February 16, 1965) is a heavy metal drummer born in Havana, Cuba. Lombardo's music career has spanned more than 25 years, during which he has been involved in the production of 29 commercial recordings with bands such as Grip Inc., Fantômas and Testament spanning a number of major genres. Lombardo's most notable work has been with the American thrash metal band Slayer, with which he performed on six albums, including the 2006 release Christ Illusion, for which he received critical praise.

Lombardo's musical interest was sparked by playing along to a Santana record with bongo drums and was later influenced by the musical styles of Led Zeppelin and KISS. Lombardo is known as one of the most aggressive and influential heavy metal drummers; his use of double bass drums has been called "astonishingly innovative" and earned him the title "the godfather of double bass". Over his career, he has had a significant influence on the metal scene, and has inspired many modern metal drummers.

For me, drumming is often the most interesting, compelling part of a band. My favorite drummer, and perhaps musician is Jack DeJohnette. The man is an absolute musical titan, a genius whose work has continued the liberation of drums as a strictly time keeping that was started by Max Roach. His work with Miles was intense, giving the pulse to a band that included monsters like Chick, Joe Z, Steve Grossman, Liebman, Dave Holland and John McLaughlin. His work after that has never lost that raw edge and urgency. His work with Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock is some of the most interesting jazz today. Jack shows up in so much great music, (Mike Brecker's swann song "Pilgrimage" is beautiful) and leaves his unique stamp of rhythmic mastery and melodicism.
