This is crazy. His take on the Joker would have put him on the moon.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday of a possible drug overdose in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said.

Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment.

The Academy Award nominated actor was 28.

"Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," police spokesman Paul Browne told CNN.

"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

Ledger was found by a housekeeper who had gone to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse in the Soho apartment, Browne said.

He was declared dead at about 3:30 p.m., Browne said.

In 2005, the actor played Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," about two cowboys who had a secret relationship.

The role earned him the Oscar nomination.

Ledger was born in Perth, Australia.

PCB, I read about this in a thread over on the WP forum. I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, but I really enjoyed his roll as Gabriel Martin in The Patriot.

What a damn shame. And here everyone has been waiting for Britney Spears to self destruct....

Wow, that is sad. He had so much going for him. Another life wasted.

How very sad. Such a talent with so many years ahead of him. Thoughts going out to his family, especially his little girl - what a tragedy for them.

There are way too many young Hollywood types either dying or "wandering in the wilderness." What gives??

This is so sad, sad beyond words...

His performances in Brokeback Mountain and Monster's Ball are two of the greatest performances I've seen in recent years. A truly special actor.

Lots of money, lots of free time, nobody looking out for them. Sad.

He finished principal photography so he still will be in the film. He looks damn good in it, too. A real freaking shame, looks like it was just a few too many pills to relax before a massage. Doesn't sound like he had any plans to end it or was doing anything crazy. Pretty tragic.

That's a darn shame. I liked him quite a bit in several movies, especially Lords of Dogtown, and was looking forward to the new Batman (still am).

Another young actor just passed away a few days ago . . . Brad Renfro. He wasn't in quite the same tier as Heath, but he still had a lot going for him, and a lot more to look forward to. I think I read he was involved with Heroin.

How sad all of these stories are.

Suicide is such a soft way to duck out. What a chump.

Chris, it's uncertain at this time whether he committed suicde. Let's let the coroner do his thing and see what he says.

Agreed. I don't pretend to know the guy, but who ducks out before the massage? Sounds more like an accident to me.

I have no idea what caused this young man's death or whether it was accidental or intentional. But I disagree with the characterization above.

Suicide happens when extreme emotional pain exceeds the resources to cope with it. It's not necessarily that the victim chooses an "easy" way out--and taking one's life doesn't seem that easy to me--rather, it's seen by the victim as the only way out of the pain.

Walk a mile in someone else's shoes.

A fine actor who had a tremendous future ahead of him. So very sad. Love and compassion to all who knew and loved him. I hope there were many.
