Yesterday I got a nice radioactive isotope and a nice blue dye injection, then a nice 2 hour nap at the hospital.....
... and when I woke up, I had 3 less lymph nodes under my right arm, an 8 by 4 centimeter piece of the arm gone, and a new piece of my neck missing too!

MELANOMA

Getting to the punch line - the pathology results indicate no bad cells left the melanoma spot on my arm and traveled to the sentinel lymph nodes - all a good sign while we wait for a more detailed pathology report, one we expect will be more good news.

There are some lessons for you all here.....

1. Listen to your wife, husband, friends or whoever if they see anything unusual....don't delay!

2. If the first doctor you see blows it off, but you don't feel right about it, push back, or go see a different doctor.

3. Stay out of the sun - or stay covered up with high SPF lotion.

I loss a bunch of months not taking my own advice above.

A few other thoughts....I've got the best wife in the world, I'm humbled by the prayer lists I was on across the USA, and I intentionally said nothing here before, because I'd prefer all the positive energy be directed to others with more pressing and grave problems - you know who those folks are....

Jim, that must've been scary, which is why we put these things off.

I'm glad to hear that your initial results are good, and I'll send thoughts, prayers and healing vibes for good news from the more detailed report.

Scary, Jim, but glad you noticed the signs and got a second opinion when one was needed. Sounds like you've gotten good results but I'm adding you to my prayer list anyway and hoping your healing is complete and speedy. And thanks for the good advise you shared here (like paying attention to changes in skin, protection from the sun).

Jim, It was a melanoma? That's scary. I hope they got it all.
I guess you know CowboyNeil had a melanoma removed also, as well as my brother in law. You know that you need to be more dilagent now in both staying out of the sun and checking yourself out.
I have had hundreds of skin cancers removed and also had thousands of liquid nitrogen freezing procedures. My skin cancers have not been a melanoma (I get basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, so far), so they are not as scary, but they sure have me checking my skin out all the time. I'd rather have a non-cancer removed just in case, then wait and see. What's a little scarring.
Best of luck buddy.

AMEN JIM, listen to what he has to say.

I see my dermatoligist twice a year faithfully because of my stupidity when I was younger.

I have also had a Lymph Node removed when they removed a growth on my right thigh.

Going for a full body check in two months.

THE SUN IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.

Scary chit. I can't tell you how many times I have been seriously sunburned in my life. I have had one basil cell carcinoma removed already. Not near as serious as melanoma, but still...

Glad to hear your prognosis is favorable, Jim. Take good care!

Good to hear your nodes are clean, Jim. Must've been unsettling. You've got a great resource in Jen. I bet your listening skills have improved now that this is behind you!

I am of the spotted variety and have had two of them removed and have my eye on a couple more for a closer inspection. I'll never forget the dermatologist asking me if I wanted to see what she removed before it went to the lab. Uhhhh...no....the hole in my thigh is enough, thanks. *laugh*

I'll let JFC comment on his efudex treatment for those pre-cancerous cells. After that, I don't know why people would go for a chemical peel voluntarily!
