So supposedly Bush sent a tax proposal to Congress for an instant tax relief. The idea is to prevent a recession. The proposal is $800 for individuals or $1,600 for married couples. I'm sure this is taking away from something else important that we will have to pay for in the end...but forget that! What would you do with the money!

My ideas:

1) pay down some debt.
2) buy a new appliance.
3) save or invest.

but heck with that, I NEED some new DVD's, still don't have an electric guitar, some surround speakers, and hundreds of other toys and gadgets...

They want you to spend it hoping it jump starts the economy (I don't like the idea because of inflation issues but BFD). I say pay some debt and spend some on yourself. Lots of good guitars for $400 or less. Enjoy!

Money like this I put into the category of "found money". Money you didn't expect to have, but now you do. Like finding a 20 in the pocket of jacket you haven't worn in a while. I always like to do something fun with found money. With that kind of money I'd probably take a nice little trip somewhere, or buy something I really wanted but didnt necessarily need.

I choose your #1 suggestion for me.

I like your suggestion also to "forget that and say what you would do with it" but let's see how long this thread can stay at that level and not turn into a bashing....

I'll take the money, but this is like tossing a deck chair off the Titanic.

With the $300 I got on the last Bush rebate I bought my first CD burner and that got me into show trading.

With $800 now, I would buy some more photography gear to expand what I have to offer photos buyers. Then hopefully that investment would turn things to where I'm making a living at my photography.

since the thinking behind this latest stoke of genius is that the lower classes, or the "chattering classes" as Laura Bush says, don't invest but will "instantly spend" (on rent, food, bills) thus averting recession; and since my sociology book tells me that despite my so-called middle class status my values are lower class, I guess I'd throw it away rather than use it prudently.

maybe on an ounce of bliss?

Is that $800 before taxes or after taxes?

If this comes to pass, since my goal is to reduce debt, I'd prefer to put it toward that purpose. Other things tend to come along and "get in the way", though...

I'd put it all on "00" and see what happens. ( about 30K if ya hit)

easy come easy go.

Ya might as well have fun with it, and paying down a credit card is no fun.

A whopping $1,600.00 I'd bank it for part of next years heating oil.
How exciting.

Like most here, I'd pay debt (maybe after a nice dinner with the family).

But I have a question - is this going to be an advanced payment against 2008 exemptions, deductions, or credits?

I was happy as a pig in mud when I got that $1,500.00 check several years ago (three kids under 18), but was quite pissed off when I learned that the $1,500.00 in my hand at the time was coming out of the $3,000.00 I was expecting come the following Spring. I would just as soon have left things the way they were.

So, if Bush wants to lower my taxes for the year by $1,600.00 and send it to me know, that's great, I'll take it, but if this is just some accounting trick, and this is just money I would be receiving anyway a few months down the road, then **** it. Leave things alone.
