I heard on the radio a few minutes ago that two women who work at Glaxo-Smith-Klein, where Bluedad works, were struck by lightning while outside on a smoke break, killing one of them and critically injuring the other. I tried to call John and see if he was at the plant when it happened, but haven't gotten him yet. Hopefully he'll return my call soon or check in here. Geez...how awful.

It's in Aiken, SC. Aiken is 20 or 30 minutes from where I am.

According to the radio reports, they're still trying to notify the victim's families.

What an awful thing to happen. Hope John is okay.

We had some crazy lightning up here in NY this morning...very unusual for NY this time of year. I don't think any bolts hit the ground though.

Mitch

Geeze..getting hit with a bolt of lightning...what a way to go. Heart goes out to the family, and well wishes for Bluedad.
Freaky..while I am typing it is Raining with Thunder and Lightning here in NYC at 1:30 pm.
Sounds very strange in the Winter to hear this here.

Aiken, SC -- According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, 56-year-old Brenda F. Baker, of Aiken, was pronounced dead at 6:14 a.m. on Friday, January 11.

Ms. Baker was the apparent victim of a lightning strike.

According to witnesses, Ms. Baker had taken an outdoor break around 5:00 a.m. from her job as a packaging operator for Glaxo Smith Klein Pharmaceuticals in Aiken, SC, when the lighting strike occurred near a break area.

Ms. Baker was employed by the Kelly Temp Agency, and had worked at the pharmaceutical company for approximately 4 months.

Another unnamed employee was also struck, but survived and was able to call for help.

The second victim was transported to Doctor's Hospital, in Augusta. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Just heard from Big Dave. John came to work about an hour after it happened. I'll let them fill in the details if neccesary.

Hey all. Sorry I wasn't able to post when I finally heard from John. I was in a meeting from 10 to 12, then went to a lunch meeting. Just got back in, but did hear from John around noon. He didn't know the girl who died, but does know the girl who was hurt, but it sounds like she's going to be alright. John arrived to work an hour after it all happened. They were still doing the on scene investigation at the time. He said they were going to shut the plant down for the rest of the day, but had material deliveries coming in and they were handling those as they came in. Anyway, Bluedad is fine. Condolences to the family of the victim.

Just one hectic day. Got to waork this morning to find out that lightning had struck two people. One had died and the other one was on the way to Augusta, GA to the Burn Center....

Damned shocking. Went in anyway to see if I could help route traffic or whatever. Had to work a few hours and take care of some trucker traffic. Left work and went to visit the lady that was in the burn center. Both her husband and father work in the plant and her father and I go back almost thirty years. Great family. Made the visit and she is doing fine and will probably be released from the hospital tommorrow. I did get her to laugh while I was there....

The lady that passed, God bless her, had only been working at the plant for a week in a temporary position, but had made a real good impression on the people that she worked with and from what I understand was nice person and a good worker.

As bad as it is there could have been a lot more people in the area. Several of the smokers decided not to go ourside and smoke on their last break.

And although we all know it or should know it, we all are only moments away from death.

Damned sobering thought.....

Glad to see you here buddy.

If you had been on a different shift, there might have been a different outcome. It reminds me of that benefit ride I was on April 1, 2006 when the woman lost control of her car and plowed down 10 bikes, killing one person, critically injuring four, seriously injuring a couple others. I was towards the front of the pack and was only seconds off from being a part of the melee'.

There for the grace of God go I.
