The most memorable concerts I saw was at the Newport Folk Festival where the Allmans headlined. It was one of the best venues I've ever seen them at. Also on the bill were Grace & Nocturnals, The John Butler Trio, North Mississippi All Stars and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Newport is a historic city and has a rich musical heritage, and any historians of folk, jazz, blues and pop music should consider visiting Newport during festival time! I'd love to go back. Can't wait for the 2008 lineup to be announced.

My favorite show was the ABB at Jazzfest. The best day of 18 months in New Orleans. I also saw Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, ZZ Top, Van Morrison, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Radiators, Dr. John, Steely Dan, and a whole bunch more at JazzFest.

My second favorite show was Clapton and The Kid in Birmingham. Thanks, Rusty!

I saw Tab Benoit and Sonny Landreth several times at various venues, and lots of other local bands.

not bad for an old guy. some good quality runs in there for sure, some wonderful serendipity with new, young acts, good range of venues. the muse is a tiny room in the arts district, across from the neighborhood theatre, a 900 capacity converted 1930's movie theatre. snug harbor is a 200 or so capacity rock club within walking distance of my house. blumenthal is the opry house, verizon the shed, spirit square the wonderful, stained glass decorated old church in the heart of uptown charlotte, and of course, there's the World Famous Visulite. i didn't frequent the Vis as much this year - oh for the wonderful jammy days of 1999 - 2004 or so - but talk about quality.

i may be missing a couple i forgot to put on my planner.

2/9/2007 greenlight @ the evening muse
2/14/2007 jonathan richman @ the evening muse (jojo on valentine’s day, beth and i standing in front of the tiny stage, what could be better?)
2/16/2007 aquarium rescue unit @ the visulite
2/17/2007 aquarium rescue unit @ the visulite (talk about an awesome 2-night run! everyone brought their A game the first night, then scorched THAT the second!)
3/1/2007 blue man group arena rock tour @ the colonial center in columbia (hahahahaha! if you’ve seen a lot of big rock shows over the years, go see this, you’ll be rotflyao, and it rocks – you’re all WASTED!)
3/21/2007 george winston @ spirit square
4/4/2007 Paul Bollenback Trio @ Smoke NYC (an evening of some of the finest musicianship you can get in NYC - it's B3 night at Smoke)
4/5/2007 allman brothers band @ the beacon NYC
4/5/2007 scrapomatic @ the makor (just the last part of the show)
4/6/2007 allman brothers band @ the beacon NYC
4/7/2007 allman brothers band @ the beacon NYC
4/7/2007 nocentelli, neville, abts, lewis & hess @ BB Kings
4/8/2007 allman brothers band @ the beacon NYC (those last 3 nights - wow!)
5/25/2007 dTb at the visulite!
5/26/2007 dTb at the visulite! (what an amazing two night run, what a lot of friends from all over visiting! branford marsalis sits in the first night and the audience isn’t impressed by who he is, we all just went “can you please bring it as hard as dTb or move on? he did.))
6/7/2007 oteil & the peacemakers @ the double door inn
6/13/2007 fall out boy / +44 / the academy is... / cobra starship @ verizon (a fine time with the girls – mom drives, dad drinks, what, $60 worth of beer? that’d be...4? 5? lot of fun.)
6/20/2007 wilco @ ovens (sublime)
6/21/2007 tower of power @ neighborhood theater (mom & dad rock completely out – love to see a horn showdown between these guys and the asbury jukes)
7/9/2007 fiery furnaces / dos (malos) @ the visulite (dos (malos) was like some mixture of the Beach Boys and a 60’s east LA garage rock band. great stuff. the kids liked the fiery furnaces more than me)
7/20/2007 GrassRoots Festival (meaning about 30 bands)
7/27/2007 marah @ the evening muse (THIS is the show beth is still talking about. tiny club, 80 people, they could’ve been playing MSG and couldn’t have played more intensely. from 2 feet away from us. after the show, i plopped down on the sidewalk next to serge and said, ‘gimme a drag off that brother. my kid’s jealous cause she’s in wymoming and her mom and i are here, to which he & the others went, ‘oh, it’s YOU guys’ – hahahahaha!)
7/29/2007 hot tuna @ spirit square
8/10/2007 ABB @ verizon amphitheatre (107 degrees – hottest day EVER in charlotte. hahahahaha!)
8/22/2007 willie nelson, merle haggard, ray price @ cabarrus county arena (dad sees the old faves, alone, from the front row center. ray price is like some amazing country version of bobby blue bland – wow!)
9/1/2007 steve nieve / tincup prophette @ the evening muse (an evening of wonderful solo – accompanied by percussionist – music. she’s my daughter’s new hero)
9/11/2007 elvis costello & steve nieve @ blumenthal
9/15/2007 shaafatullah khan @ blumenthal (this guy was improvising tablature and singing to us, in advance, what he was going to play for the next 75 strikes. 300 people in a 3000 seat venue, talk about up close and personal)
9/19/2007 machine go bang @ snug harbor (it’s been a long time since i’ve seen a band beg for food and gas money from the stage, but...
10/2/07 ladysmith black mambazo @ blumenthal
11/30/2007 Del McCoury Band @ the Neighborhood Theatre
11/30/2007 The Old Ceremony @ Snug Harbor (these guys are going somewhere. fronted by cello, violin, and electric guitar. ELO minus the cheese whiz factor meets the velvet underground without the dissonance and self-indulgence.)
12/30/2007 ysb @ bhojanic restaurant in Atlanta
12/31/2007 derek trucks / susan tedeschi & north mississippi allstars @ the Fox in Atlanta

geeez... i didn’t get out much this year. can i count musicals as concerts?

I just have to say, I almost hate responding to threads like this. But I did so to make it ok for people who go to a lot of shows to talk about it. Sometimes I notice that the people who go to the least amount of shows have the unkindest of comments to say on these boards, but I know from my life before 2001 that is how most people attend shows. They see an artist or band perhaps once a year or even once in a life time. A person who goes to a lot of shows, even three or four a year of the same band or artist, is a person who is part of a sub-culture.

I also believe that regardless of how many shows you see in a year or a lifetime, if you let music into your life, your life is better for it. I started listening to music way before I started going to concerts.

Perhaps what ruins music for some is the business or politics of music? It's a damn shame.

Just something to consider in the new year.
