Candlemass is a Swedish epic doom metal band established in the 1980s by Leif Edling (bass), its leader and songwriter. The band is originally from Stockholm.

Biography

After Leif Edling dissolved the band Nemesis, he started his own band under the name Candlemass. The first Candlemass album was Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, released in 1986 and now considered a milestone in the doom metal scene. The line-up for Epicus Doomicus Metallicus was:

* Leif Edling: bass
* Matz Ekström: drums
* Mats Mappe Björkman: guitar
* Johan Längqvist: session vocals
* Klas Bergwall: session lead guitar

The next release was Nightfall (1987), considered by some as one of the greatest doom metal albums ever. The line-up had now changed: new members were Messiah Marcolin (vocals), Lars Johansson (lead guitar) and Jan Lindh (drums). This line-up is generally considered the most important and the most successful in the band's history. The next two albums were Ancient Dreams (1988), that is now considered an apogee of doom metal classics, and Tales of Creation (1989), where the band moved beyond the edges of classic doom metal and made its touch to progressive metal. This album is distinguished from previous releases by adding some speed-up patterns into the band's original sound, usually used in progressive metal. In 1990, a live album was released. Shortly afterwards, a dispute between the band members resulted in Messiah Marcolin's decision to leave.

After the departure of Marcolin, Candlemass recruited vocalist Thomas Vikström and recorded Chapter VI (1992). Candlemass then disbanded, partly because the album was unsuccessfu] and partially because Leif Edling had formed another project under the name of Abstrakt Algebra. With Abstrakt Algebra not doing well, Leif suddenly recruited a new line-up under the name of Candlemass and recorded the album Dactylis Glomerata, which was a combination of songs for a new Abstakt Algebra CD and some new material. A couple of years later the Black Sabbath-inspired album From the 13th Sun was released.

In 2002, the members of the classic Candlemass line-up decided to reform. They performed some well-received live shows and released another live album. Other albums released by the reformed band were remastered versions of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Ancient Dreams and Tales of Creation. A DVD called Documents of Doom has been released as well. The band was working on a new album, with some new songs recorded, and searching for a record label, but differences arose again, resulting in Candlemass disbanding again. In the meantime, Leif Edling started a new project, Krux, with former Abstrakt Algebra singer Mats Leven and two members of Entombed.

In November 2004, the band announced that they have re-united for the second time. They have recorded a new album, named simply Candlemass, with the classic line-up. It was released in May 2005. This CD was named in the top 20 of 2005. They won a Swedish Grammy in 2005.

In 2006 the band announced that a new album was in preparation, to be released sometime in 2007. After much uncertainty regarding Messiah's participation, in October 2006 it was settled that Messiah was out for good. The band found a new vocalist in the person of Robert Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus) who recorded the band's new album King of the Grey Islands, released on June 22, 2007. The new album is self-produced except for four songs produced by Andy Sneap.

With Robert Lowe on Vocals

Robert Lowe is an American singer. He was brought into the band Solitude Aeturnus by his friend Lyle Steadham in 1989 replacing Chris Gabehardt. His vocal style is typically classical heavy metal with a high falsetto, laden with emotion. For the later albums he is also the main lyricist.

Lowe also appeared as a session singer on the first Last Chapter album.

On 22 January 2007, Leif Edling announced Lowe to be the new Candlemass singer and he has recorded the new album King of the Grey Islands.

He also stays with Solitude Aeturnus.

Messiah Marcolin (born Bror Jan Alfredo Marcolin on December 10th, 1967), also known as 'Eddie Marcolin', is a vocalist best known for his work in the doom metal band Candlemass.

1984-1985

Messiah Marcolin's first releases were with the Heavy metal band Mercy. After recording an EP, Mercy were looking for a singer to record with and Messiah was asked to just two weeks before recording. He sang on two Mercy albums, the first in 1984 and the second one year later. Looking for a heavier direction, Messiah decided to leave the band.

1987-1991, Early Career With Candlemass

Marcolin initially joined Candlemass to replace session vocalist Johan Längqvist who could not be convinced to remain as singer for the band after Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. His debut with Candlemass is the band's second album Nightfall.

Leif Edling, main songwriter for candlemass, was initially relucant to give Marcolin a chance in the band as Messiah continued to call him late at night stating that he would be Candlemass' next singer. This made Edling believe Messiah was "crazy". After many calls, Edling finally agreed to give Marcolin an audition if he moved south to Stockholm from the town in northern Sweden in which he lived. Messiah proceeded to do this and was soon a member of Candlemass.

Due to personal differences with some of the other members during the Tales of Creation tour in 1991, Marcolin Left Candlemass. At this point, he had three full length studio albums and a live a album with Candlemass.

1991-2003

In the interim, Messiah worked on several projects. In 1993 he co-founded Memento Mori with Mike Wead and sang on two of their albums in 1993 and 1994 before leaving as he was not being credited for writing melodies.

Messiah then worked with members of Stillborn on a project named "Colossus" and released a demo and contributed a cover of "Sad But True" to a Metallica tribute album named "Metal Militia: A Tribute to Metallica" in 1996. The band did not progress further after this.

Following the departure from Collossus, Messiah returned to Memento Mori to record and release an additional album named Songs for the Apocalypse, Vol. 4 in 1997.

2002-2006

The "Nightfall era" line up of Candlemass reformed in 2002 and did various festivals and gigs. From this reunion tour, Candlemass released Doomed For Live, in addition to another compilation, Essential Doom, which saw the inclusion of a demo track of 'Witches', a song to be included on their eponymous 2005 release. After the Candlemass album, Messiah appeared on 2 dvd releases (Documents of Doom and The Curse of Candlemass) highlighting the two eras which he fronted the band, before a statement by Candlemass was released in October 2006, noting yet another Messiah departure.

Additionally, in 2003, Messiah co-founded and released a single three track demo with "Requiem", though the band did not progress further citing the Candlemass reunion and musical differences within the band as reasons for not continuing.

Well, being the curious sort that I am, I regretfully went to Candlemass's official web site. I am now officially creeped out and more than a little worried about who the TRUE Candlemass "followers" are on this board. Would all the cult members now raise their hands????

I would say most Candlemass fans would have no idea about the Allman Brothers, I don't know for sure. I'm sure the ABB don't get any threads though.

It's interesting..out of 2 Candlemass threads on this site.......There has been

472 Post and 4,986 Views...thats weird....there has been some amusing replies and post.

Mostly bickering back and forth.

I think the 2 threads may entice the ABB to cover a Candlemass song at the Beacon run. Possibly having Messiah Marcolin as a guest.

Also rumour has it that Candlemass will cover Midnight Rider on their next studio album.

I think you folks are aching for me to fill that top space with some Candlemass videos and Bio, plus photo's.

You know you want it.
