Has anyone else seen the video clips of Whipping Post and the beginning of Mountain Jam
on You Tube? Posted by a guy in Britain. How did the film get over there? I thought his
user name might be British, but in his other clips he had stuff on Doctor Who's police box.

haha! I work in theatre, we built the tardis for a show , we get to play with good toys in theatre

In regards to the footage, it's been around for a while thanks to brother Hophead who went to great lenghts to source it. Unfortunately, originally it had little or no sound - and thus it has lain so for a few years. Recently, Masahiko and I have talked of matching up a really good audience tape of the show with the footage, and this was undertaken . We are there. First draft copies have been done, an early draft is what can be seen on tube. (Masahiko your copy should be with you any day - it has been posted)
It's running at about 40-50 mins of footage, petty much all of W'Post and all of Mtn Jam. And .... I can't stop watching it! The segments were not in order, so I had to live and breath it for days - and when it was done i took a step back and ..... holy ****! We've had a part of Mtn Jam before, but Post is better (not the version that's up on tube right now) - I love it, it's too cool to be the first person to see it matched up with sound once again . One day, hopefully we'll see it all, it's in the hands of folks that want cash, which is a shame. I know that all of it must excist because I have a tiny segment of "don't keep me wonderin" which was from early in the set and also the footage of Duane that was from before they even played. In the footage that Masahiko sent me, there is also shots of the mayor making his speech.

Yep , V2 (as Colin named it ) Is shaping up good, I'm about to watch a render in fact. I upped my strictness and didn't use any filler shots to plug holes (cept crowd) , as a result I've lost about 4 mins of drums/bass which is a shame, cause I'd have loved to be able to include Berry doing his stuff - but missing footage And I've got one shot in Post that i can't marry up , it's all good until Betts does something completely off the wall , and for the life of me i can't pick it up on the audio ..... it's DRIVIN ME CRAZY!!!! hehe

hey Dave,

Awesome work - I'm really glad you made the time and put the effort in to do this. I actually started doing something very similar a few years back, but time and hard disk failures and other things got the better of me. The black and white synched footage that crops up from time to time with the "love valley 1970" white label at the start of it is actually the result of the first try I did in Adobe Premiere. It was from an old vhs I had that was ntsc, at the time I could only catch ntsc video in black and white - technology wasn't quite there yet for the home user! I had my vcr hooked up to a hauppage capture card, old school! Pain staking nonetheless - god knows how you've managed to get this much together! Great stuff.

Anyway I'm just about to PM you - wanted to give some public kudos though!

Cheers, Jules

Cheers Jules, I've actually come across your Black n'White clips in the past, the beginning of Mountain Jam was one I remember, I also seem to remember that the audio was really good - what was the source of this , or did you "remaster?" and the speed of the audio was tweaked up?

I've been doing this one on Vegas, I have Premier but not ever tried it, and i was considering using Adobe After Effects to give Duane a lightsaber .... but thought better of it

I've never done a B&P before so I'm not perfectly clear on the logistics. I assume someone sends me a copy, that I announce that I'm set to B&P, and then solicit folks who are interested. Whoever responds first will get something (not extra money!!!!!) above and beyond my compensation for the blank and postage they use to get me started. PM works best, methinks.

Is this the right protocol? If not, how does it work?

Thanks.

Billastro

but how about syncing it with the real audio, how ever crappy it sounds? I'd much rather hear what really went with the visual, than something that just sounds good

Hey Dave!

On my old cassette copy of love valley audio, which was marked 7/17-19/70 - I seem to recall that there was about 2 mins of MJ audio which was very good quality tacked on the end as filler. Now, I'm delving into something that happened a few years ago and I don't remember too well, but my recollection is that in the same vault as the rest of the video footage is actually multitrack audio from the board of the whole gig, and what happened is something like that when Hophead tracked it down, the guys that have the footage in the vault did a test mix of a few minutes of MJ to prove their authenticity, which is what ended up floating around as filler on a few old tapes. (Sorry Hop, correct me if I'm wrong!)

Sadly that cassette got chewed up by a crappy tape deck and thrown out, and when I traded for the show on cdr subsequently, it didn't have the filler. So I don't have that good audio any more unfortunately.

What I'd really love to know is exactly how much cash the owners of the footage really want? Is it an amount that we all could realistically raise? I'm very much of the opinion that as time goes by the worth of things like this goes down, not up. Those of us that follow "the church of Duane" are really a rarefied breed in the grand scheme of things and the more time passes, the fewer people are left that would really pay top dollar to see footage like this. I hope it sees the light of day in my lifetime anyway.
