Ronnie got an X-Box 360 for Christmas and he brought it over to my house yesterday. After playing a game or two he wanted to show me how well it could play CDs. He asked me for one of my favorites and I pointed him to a large box of CDs I had just ripped.

Next thing I know I hear Mountain Jam blasting from my stereo! Turns out Ronnie went through that huge box of CDs and picked Eat a Peach for his first listen! 33 minutes of Duane and Berry thundered out and filled me with joy ...

None of my children or stepchildren or friends of any of the aforementioned ever liked, played for me, or even begrudgingly went along with hearing the Allman Brothers. It always was "Not them again", "Old hippie music", "Turn that off"!

Where do find these kids?

My Daughter was telling everyone on Christmas Day how I used to torture her with Tom Waits on the way to School years ago ...also with King Diamonds high pitched voice. She would beg me not to play Tom Waits...but I did..sometimes...just to be mean.

I did take her to an ABB show a few years ago..with Diamond Jim and Bill (Fast43). she said it was great..but I think it was to make "Dad Happy". I cried when they played "Layla"..it was the first time I heard them do it. She later asked me why...I said you have to be a fan to understand.

We were in a restaurant eating one night and "Soulshine" came on.

Without missing a beat my daughter, Alissa (like 2 at the time, if that) said..."Otiel"

Made my night.

I'm proud to say my 8 year old can tell me when Derek is playing and when Warren is playing.

My older son was never realy into "my music" but over the last few years I've taken him to a Beacon show each year and after the show he always says..when you get that recording, burn me a copy

My boys (35 & 32) were home over Chrstmas. On Christmas night I was getting ready for bed and went out back to get the cats in. From the garage apt in the back yard I heard several voices and laughing. They were back there with some of their old friends. Then I heard my youngest say "Ya'll listen to this....it's the best song I've ever heard." With that I hear Duane's voice coming out of the stereo (loudly) talking about King Curtis and how much his death had affected him. Of course it was the A&R Studio show with YDLM/Soul Serenade.

I didn't want to bother them but stood on the patio and listened to the whole song...tears rolling down my cheeks. Folks...this music will never die...truely... The Road Goes On Forever!

By the the way when I went to bed my wife asked me what the boys were doing. I said they're out back with their friends listening to the Allman Brothers. She said "Oh God!" rolled over and went to sleep.

For Christmas my 5 year old preschool Granddaughter drew a picture of her family. In it were her mom, dad, sister, Nanny & Papa. There was another figure with long hair. I asker her who that was and she replied, "Nanny that's your boyfriend....Duane." I didn't realize how much I have already influenced her tastes! Her mom then tells me she told her teacher that her Nanny loves Duane Allman and mushrooms. The teacher asked her mom if her Grandmother has a drug problem! She assured her that I didn't....only a mushroom sticker on my car.

This post made me cry.....and then laugh at what your wife said! I love it that my kids (17 & 20) have such varied musical tastes. One minute they're listening to Dave Matthews and the next minute it's Led Zeppelin or the Doors!

By the way, FootPattin, I see you live in Macon also! Howdy neighbor!

I'll never forget riding down the raod with my daughter when she was 7, and IMOER from the FE spun up. She said, "Daddy, that song just grabs my mind." Told her I knew just exactly what she meant. Great thread.

My one and only son sounds a bit like your oldest son. He would try to get me to listen to his music for years and I would, but I never liked it ("Where's the beat, music, rythym etc." LOL), and finally around '91 or '92 when the Brothers had reformed with Warren, I got him to go to a Red Rocks show with me. Now he goes to see the Brothers and the Mule whenever he can, and he is also finally starting to like Derek's band also. He still goes to see his "Stoner Rock" (loud, and droning to me) shows, but at least he understands what I like, and when we were watching a recent video he said, "Yeah, I think they are/were the best rock'n'roll band live ever!" A small triumph for the old man, LOL.
