RIP Dan...The Home Free album was such a part of my misspent youth...I can still see that album cover if I just look back....

Man I can't believe it. Souvenirs is a classic album. Nice guitar by Joe Walsh on "As The Raven Flies."

This absolutely breaks my heart. I listened to his albums constantly in the late 70s.....his early work (which in my opinion was his best). I saw him in concert at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in 1977. I feel like a large part of my youth died today too.

I always loved the Netherlands album. He also did a great album with the best of the newgrass musicians called High Country Snows where he was backed up by Jerry Douglas, Ricky Skaggs, Charlie McCoy, Doc Watson, Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Vince Gill,
Herb Peterson, David Grisman, Jim Buchanan, Emory Gordy, Jr, and Russ Kunkel.

Great music, great love of the mountains, RIP.

Derek

Just heard this on CNN. So sad. I loved the Netherlands album too; my favourite Dan album--listened to it over and over...

Got my husband to the Dr. a few weeks ago to get his prostate number checked.

Please men, just do it! As Bobo said to me, "Make sure he goes every year. It's vital!"

Nether Lands

By Dan Fogelberg

High on this mountain
The clouds down below
I'm feeling so strong and alive
From this rocky perch
I'll continue to search
For the wind and the snow and the sky
Oh I want a lover and I want some friends
And I want to live in the sun
And I want to do all the things that I never have done

Sunny bright mornings and pale moonlit nights
Keep me from feeling alone
Now I'm learning to fly and this freedom is like
Nothing that I've ever known
Oh I've seen the bottom and I've been on top
But mostly I've lived in between
And where do you go when you get to the end of your dream

Off in the Nether Lands I heard the sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
And deep in my brain I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings
Anthems to glory and anthems to love
And hymns filled with earthly delight
Like the songs that the darkness composes to worship the light

Once in a vision I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road
My choices were clear yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go
Oh, one road was simple acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace
When I made my decision
My vision became my release

High Country Snows

By Dan Fogelberg

There’s a place in the Rockies, a place that I know
Where the world cannot find me and the time goes so slow
In the piney wood forest, there’s a flower that grows
Through the long months of winter and the high country snows

To a house by a meadow ‘neath the towering peaks
Is a place where my heart goes when it’s love that it seeks
There a woman lies waiting like the wild growing rose
Through the long months of winter and the high country snows

In the space of a lifetime a man misses much
'Til he finds him a woman and treasures her touch
When the lakes all lie frozen and the wild wind blows
I’ll return to my darlin’ and the high country snows

DH

R.I.P. Dan. I wasn't a huge fan but some of his songs really ripped at my heart. Seems like too many of these posts about musicians passing away lately. I guess it's a good time to think about "you only live once"...

Didn't know this either - he was from Peoria, IL, and his dad was the band instructor at my high school. Souvenirs was a great album. Another one lost to prostate cancer......

I just want to bawl....

At my wedding reception, I had the DJ play "Longer" for my wife.

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you

Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you

I'll bring fire in the winter
You'll send showers in the spring
We'll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines through the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks, and the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you
I'll be in love with you

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you
I am in love with you

I saw Dan solo acoustic at The Bell Auditorium in Augusta years ago. Very intimate show. I enjoyed it tremendously.

God this SUCKS!!!

I think the lesson is that all men over the age of 40 should get regular physicals and be under the care of a physician they trust. No one wants to hear bad news but if there is bad news to hear you are going to hear it sooner or later and hearing it sooner may mean the difference between an inconvenient few months and a death sentence.

I am sorry to hear about Dan. You don't hear as many prostate cancer deaths these days, presumably because more men are getting screened and treated.

Doug
