27 years ago today

Heading down to Strawberry Fields later this afternoon.

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Love John's music. When I made a trip to New York City back in 2000 John'a apartment building and Strawberry Fields was my first stop. My 13 year old son has Lennon for a middle name. John has very much touched and influenced my life. I miss the man but his memory and music will be remembered forever.

My first trip into NYC was 7 years ago this weekend. It was a special time that I will never forget. I made the trek to see Paul Simon at the Beacon (my first time there, too). It was freezing, but we made a loop through the park after the show. It was an incredible scene, people singing in the park and on the subways - celebrating John.

I miss John Lennon every day.

There are three events in my life that I can recall in great detail - where I was, what I was doing, who I was with etc. One of those was the JFK assassination. The other two are the Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan and the night that John Lennon was killed.

On a slightly humorous note, I remember the moment of silence that I spent with several Peach heads during last year's Beacon run. Our tour guide led us to the driveway of a large apartment building overlooking Central Park. While there, we all became silent for a moment, bowing our heads in solemn remembrance. Then we walked a couple of blocks up the street ... past the actual Dakota building.

I was 24, married to my first wife Ann. We were watching television and listening to music. We saw John's face on the screen....turned the music off and heard the terrible news.

We both cried.........

Then that night Ann burned a candle for John.

John was a peaceful good man, what a loss. We Miss you John.

"And he dreams at night of Woodstock and the day John Lennon died
How the music made him happy and the silence made him cry
Yeah he thinks of John sometimes
And he has to wonder why"

--"Old Hippie," Bellamy Bros.

Amen.

It's strange, seeing those videos of John circa 1970 when he was only 30 years old, and to realize that he was only 40 when he died. I don't know how it is with you, but when I think of those like John and Duane who are gone, they still seem older than I, even now when I am way past 40. It's as if my mind remains frozen at the time when they were alive and I was younger than they were. "Most peculiar, mama," as John sang.

Requiescat In Pace, John. You are missed in this world. You gave voice to our loves, fears, and hopes. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.

Today is an important day here. One of celebration and remembrance. One of happiness and sadness. To John...a person I "grew up" with. Your lessons of peace and fellowship were so important to me at a difficult time in my life, and they made me stronger. I'll always be grateful. God rest you.
