1960's America - even with the Cold War, civil unrest, and the problems of the day, it was a much more pleasent time to live in the US. Far more safe, much more optimistic, more free, and way less less stressful (no cell phones!, no voicemail!, no email!, cheap pot!). I reflect on those times versus today and think there's good subject matter for a country song called "I Just Want My Country Back".

Merle Haggard did about 25 years ago

Are the good times really Over for Good

I wish a buck was still silver.
It was back when the country was strong.
Back before Elvis; before the Vietnam war came along.
Before The Beatles and "Yesterday",
When a man could still work, and still would.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?
Are we rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the Flag or the Liberty bell.
Wish a Ford and a Chevy,
Could still last ten years, like they should.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?

I wish coke was still cola,
And a joint was a bad place to be.
And it was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV.
Before microwave ovens,
When a girl could still cook and still would.

Stop rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell.
Stand up for the Flag and let's all ring the Liberty bell.
Let's make a Ford and a Chevy,
Still last ten years, like they should.
The best of the free life is still yet to come,
The good times ain't over for good.

My grandparents.
Children running loose on summer nights, catching firefly's and laying in the cool grass before running home to a house with an unlocked (always) door.
Cheap gas.
Lack of fear and an abundance of hope.
My friends who died too young either in Viet Nam, because of Viet Nam, or for other senseless reasons.
Those artists and musicians who did not get the opportunity to fully bloom because of untimely and early deaths.
Dancing on the grass during weekly free weekend concerts at Greenwood Park.
So's Your Mothers, Elysian Fields, Dotty Dumplings Dowry, and Blind Munchies.
Drive-In movies with a car full of friends.
Getting a little buzz on and making a covert late night visit to the Enchanted Forest or the Lost Planet with like minded friends.

for starters...

My Grandparents (Lewis and Jewel Hanson) who raised me as a kid during the 60's and gave me the happiest times of my life. I called them "Mama and Daddy"

Daddy died during 1982
Mama died during 2004

A child could have not have been given anymore love than they gave me.

I miss you both everday.....with all my Heart.
