Happy Holidays to you also.

You just had to mention sunny Florida to everyone in the North who is buried under 20 feet of snow.

Happy Channukah!

It's a true miracle that the Jewish people have lasted through all their times of strife, so let's celebrate.

Would you believe that this morning I watched the re-play of the lighting of the National Menorah on C-Span?

Happy Chanukah to all all our Hebrew brothers and sisters.

Speaking of Chanukah, there was a plane crash here in Augusta this evening. A small plane developed engine trouble, tried to make an emergency landing, but ended up crashing into a local synagogue. The pilot was killed, but several folks in the synagogue who were preparing food were unhurt. Very sad this had to happen at the beginning of such a joyous occasion.

http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/latest/lat_120507_PlaneCrash.shtml

A small plane crashed into the side of a temple off Walton Way just before 7 p.m. today, destroying the aircraft and killing the pilot, the only person on board.

"It just glided right into the side of the building," said Vallirie D. Hooper, who was traveling nearby on her way to choir practice. "It was hard to tell if the engines were working. It was a flash and a flame."

A small plane crashed into the side of Congregation Children of Israel's Walton Way Temple at 3005 Walton Way on Wednesday night. Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten said the pilot of the two-seat plane was killed, and identification would be difficult.

Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said the crash occurred at 6:55 p.m. and the plane had left Charleston, S.C. and was headed to Cartersville, Ga. Mr. Knudson said the pilot had reported an engine problem to air traffic control before crashing.

The plane,a fixed wing single-engine Piper, is registered to VPC Air Inc., located in Cartersville, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's online registry.

Wreckage lay on the west side of Congregation Children of Israel's Walton Way Temple at 3005 Walton Way and the roof on that side appeared to be damaged.

Firetrucks and deputies blocked off Walton Way as curious neighbors gathered amid the blur of flashing lights. Some have talked about how they forget how close Daniel Field Airport is - probably less than a mile away from the apparent crash site.

Rabbi Robert Klensin was giving a speech at the Covenant Presbyterian Church tonight when he learned a plane had hit the temple on Waton Way.

He said all he could think about was the dozen or so members of the congregation who were inside cooking.

Fortunately no one inside was hurt, Rabbi Klensin said.

"It's very sad for the pilot who was killed and his family, but it is also a blessing no one else was hurt," he said.

He said he thinks it's possible the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing. From the air, the only spot not covered with homes and trees is the school parking lot just west of the temple.

"Maybe in the last seconds of life he was looking out for other people," Rabbi Klensin said. No one driving on Walton Way was hurt, and no one inside the temple was injured.

During the season of Hanukkah, it is a time to count blessings, one is making of miracles. Looking from across the street at the west side of the temple, Rabbi Klensin said, "Look. He even missed both of the telephone poles."

Rabbi Klensin said the small plane was from Daniel Field, but no one yet knows if the pilot was coming or going.

Barrett Lane resident Nancy Foss whose home is nearby said the crash made the strangest sound and rattled her windows.

"At first I thought it was a transformer, then I heard a bang." Then there was a crunch." The plane hit just a few minutes after 7 p.m.

Rabbi Klensin said it doesn't appear that the temple sustained any structure damage. The fire and heat melted some of the roof overhang on the west side of the building.

My daughter is being raised in our mixed household, and I think I won her over to 'my side' this year: she now fully understands that she gets 8 presents at Chanukkah, and of course she gets them all weeks before Christmas. Thank goodness my ancestors had a knack for scheduling and public relations.

Happy Chanukkah, all.
