I know I can come up with some morbid stuff to post

But my Mom just left to have her cat named "Ivy' put to sleep. Ivy was 17 years old, my Mom got her when Ivy was 14...from an animal pound. The person that had owned Ivy had passed away and Mom felt sorry for her and brought her home.

She had still been eating and drinking water until today...she would not even get up at all. The vet told my Mom 3 weeks ago that she did not have long.

I have been staying with my Mom and Stepdad for going on 3 weeks. Have not been working due to the anxiety issues that I have. At my house after Barb would go to work...I would be alone all day...and I got where I was like a Zombie. At least at my Mom's I stay busy helping her. I wanted to go with her to take the cat...but she said that I was depressed enough already..that I should not go. So far the Meds i'm taking have not worked out, possibly going to make another change tomorrow...like I'm looking forward to that. I feel like a test animal at some clinic...LOL...although it's not funny.

Thank God for you folks here....posting is the highlight of my day at the moment.

I have been mentioning all of you that have your own illnesses and troubles in my Prayers each night." Good Vibes" and "Love" to you all !

Mom will be back soon.... I know she will be very sad. I got a great Mom, don't know what I would do without her. Don't want to know either.

I hate to hear that. It really is like losing a member of the family. Good vibes being sent to your Mother. I know its tough to replace a longtime pet, but getting another cat probably would be the best medicine. Its always worked for us.

She has 2 dogs, 8 cats still.

plus a couple of possums and raccoons she feeds outside every night. Plus outside Birds that she keeps food for.

They have a HUGE house...so there is plenty of room.

They actually have a Pet Graveyard down a trail....where Ivy will be going soon.

Yep..it hurts to lose pets.

Kenny, my eldest cat, Casper, a solid white short haired male, is 18 now. We got him as a kitten for my oldest daughter when she was about 18 months old. We've had him all this time. Although he is presently in decent shape, I know he's on limited time. He was feeling puny a couple of weeks ago, so we took him to the vet. He had an upper respiratory infection, so the vet gave us some antibiotics to give him. Unfortunately, he also found a lemon sized tumor in his abdomen. He rebounded very nicely from the URI. He's still eating, he's still using the bathroom, and he still comes to us to get his lovin'. We're keeping an eye on him, but like I told my wife, we'll know when it's time. He's enjoying the extra indoor time he gets in his advanced years. Casper has spent most of his time outside over the years because he sheds - a LOT.

Your mom sounds like a real sweetheart. Hope you get your meds worked out so you'll feel like your old self again real soon. Thanks for sharing the story of Ivy.

kendawg,

never an easy thing. i put my beloved kitty Pi down after a relapse of a kidney issue last October, during a time when just about everything that could go wrong with my life, was going wrong (serious illness, notification of the death of my father, loss of job, loss of good friends, lots of phucked up **** ).

I do not condone making life or death decisions, but somehow i knew that it was the right thing to be done.....the moment kitty was released from his body i felt it, i knew that it was the most humane thing i could have done and he thanked me for it. I held him for the next three hours till he got cold, dug a hole and planted him under our favorite tree in the front yard - right in the dirt. it ws the right thing to do. can't explain much past that except to say that you know when it is the right time.

never an easy thing to be sure.

Sorry to hear about Ivy, Kenny. Our pets are like our children - sorry your mom has lost one of her 'babies'. Sounds like mom has a big heart and has opened up her home to plenty of living creatures, though - like Dave said...she sounds like a sweetie! Glad you have your family by your side (both at home and here) as you got through your struggles. I've been there myself and it's not a road you want to go up alone...even if you feel compelled to pull away, it's best to share with others and seek their companionship. Hang in there - hopefully your docs will find the meds that meet your needs and you will start seeing light.

Kenny,

Sorry to hear about your mother's cat. Once they aren't eating or drinking, it's a give away that something is wrong. You know the time will eventually come for all of us, but it's not something you can really prepare for.

Lost my first pooch last Christmas Eve-I still turn around sometimes, thinking he is following me. I swear my other dog misses him as well- obviously dogs can't talk, but their look can sometimes tell the whole story.

Hope your family finds the peace & closure, & you get through the turbulence.

Sorry for your pet, I know how it feels.

What also sucks is when a pet gets lost/ or kidnapped. My mom saw our cat that went missing 3 months ago today. She told the lady who has our cat that it was ours. The lady said that she got the cat 3 months ago, and her daughter brought it home. I am 100% positive that it was our cat, it matched the description perfectly, and it even had the "heart" under its chin. This was a beautiful Siamese White cat with light blue eyes, and we had it spayed. The lady said that she isn't going to give it back, because it is hers. We are gonna steal it back.

I hate people who lie to your face.

Your stories are so sad.

We love our dog like a son; I hate to even think about this.

I guess you gain strength from it.

Good Luck

That's always sad. Go easy, Ivy.

We just adopted two kittens over the weekend. My daughter, who's 4, has been over the moon about every minute since. I'm hoping that the three of them get to spend alot of special years together.

Bhawk, that's how I look at Casper. We've had 18 great years. He's not been any trouble. Why be sad about that?

So sorry to hear that, Kenny. I know it's so tough. My dogs are like family. I lost my baby of 14 years a few years back, and two since to cancer. There is such a void when losing a pet. My saving grace was getting another dog, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Reed. She is my baby and has brought much joy. It has helped tremendously....that and time. Healing vibes and positive thoughts your way.

Sorry for your Mom's loss, Kenny. I've had my 13 YO Brittany on meds for 6 months now after congestive heart failure. The vet said 99% of dogs in his condition would have died. His incredible will to live made the decision to try the meds a no-brainer. But we know he's on borrowed time and just enjoy every day we have with him.

Well, we have a 4:30PM appointment with the vet to have Casper evaluated. He is getting getting really boney, despite still eating and drinking a little bit. He looks bad, but he still has that "I love you" look in his eyes when he looks up at you and he savors every stroke of his head. He's 18, so I guess at this point, we'll probably discuss quality of life versus quantity. I was hoping that we'd just KNOW when it was time to take him in, but now we find we are second guessing ourselves. I hope the vet can give us guidance.

Here's a pic of our old boy.

Best luck at the vet, Dave. Casper (love this name for your all white kitty ) looks like a sweety.

Hey Brother Dave,

Good luck at the Vet. Ivy was having kidney problems, she was constantly drinking water and eating pretty good. My Step dad did not want my Mom to take her to the vet. He wanted her to pass at home. But the day we took her, she was not eating or getting up. My Mom knew we had to take her. The vet said it was best that we did. Of course we just told my step dad she passed at home. He's a lawyer, tough old fellow...77 years old...never admits it...but he loves her pets.

I hope Casper has better luck, and maybe he will....i'm a hopin' for him and you all.

Kenny

Kenny, the thing that concerns us about Casper is his weight loss. At one time, he weighed 18 pounds (yes, he was probably obese for a cat, but once we got him neutered, he didn't have anything else to do but eat. ) Last time we had him to the vet, he weighed 11 pounds. I bet he's below 10 pounds now. When you pet him, all you feel is backbone. It's sad.

My wish is to be reincarnated as one of my family's pets...life couldn't get much better than that. (which could probably be a similar wish for most of you who've posted in this tread)

Kenny: My condolences for your mom's loss...the loss, no doubt, is felt throughout the family, so also for your loss, as well.

Dave: Best of luck with Casper.

I know the difficulties with which the loss of our non-human family can be. I lost "my boy" Rudy (a gentle, loving, goofy Rottwelier) almost 6 years ago, but the pain feels like it wasn't more than a week ago. The only saving grace has been our "inheritance" nearly 2 years ago of my mother-in-law's incredibly cute & even goofier (now) 10 year-old Beagle, Daisy. Talk about your opposite ends of the canine spectrum. She's showing signs of aging, but still has the play-drive of a puppy, at least for longer stretches than you'd expect for a dog her age. The vet says she'll have that play drive right up to the time she drops. I hope that's still a long time down the road.

It just doesn't seem fair that they don't get to live as long as we do.

We had a cat and dog named Spicey and Willy. They both lived to the ripe age of 18 years. Strange how we lost them both about 2 months apart. Since then we have gotten a couple hounds that have stolen our hearts. Well my heart anyway, Susie is still warming up to them. Here is "Harvey" on the left and "Trucks" on the right enjoying a day out fishing on the beach with my son Chase and I. In this picture, they have spotted another dog on a boat riding by barking at them.
