I have been keeping up with this lately, it's heartbreaking. What kind of cruel people would do something like this to a young teen. It looks as if they will not be able to prosecute them. Can you imagine if this happened to your child. I saw the parents on TV the other day. Their lives wrecked over an adults idea of a cruel joke.

I's kind of old news now, but I wanted to get some of your thoughts on the horrible, tragic story.

By LEONARD PITTS JR.

This will kill you.

Have you heard about the practical joke that was played on a girl in Dardenne Prairie, near St. Louis? You're going to slap your knee at this one. You're going to bust a gut.

See, this girl -- Megan Meier was her name -- was 13. You remember 13, that gawky, uncertain age when you're growing into a new body, hormones firing off like howitzers. They say Megan was a heavyset child, emotionally vulnerable as only an adolescent girl can be. They say she had ADD and struggled with depression.

Are you laughing yet?

It seems Megan had this friend, a girl who lived a few doors down. Through seventh grade, they had gone round and round: best friends one day, feuding the next, the way kids do. Finally, Megan broke off the friendship for good. She was done with the other girl. But the girl was not done with her.

This all happened last year, by the way, but we are indebted to reporter Steve Pokin of the Suburban Journals newspaper for bringing it to our attention just days ago. Since then, the story has made national headlines. Because everybody loves a good joke.

So anyway, sometime after Megan and the other girl ended their relationship, this guy named Josh Evans shows up on Megan's MySpace page saying he wants to be added as a friend. And this Josh, he's like a gift from the god of cute boys. He's new in town, home schooled, fatherless, a musician, a major hottie. And he wants to be friends. He thinks Megan is pretty. Chunky, socially awkward Megan.

She describes herself to him with an acrostic. M, for modern. E, for enthusiastic. G, for goofy. A, for alluring. N, for neglected.

For a time, everything was good. Oh, it was strange that Josh never gave her a phone number and never asked for hers, but Megan overlooked that. Then Josh sent that strange message: ''I don't know if I want to be friends with you anymore because I've heard that you are not very nice to your friends.'' Megan was shocked. Where was this coming from?

It was a Sunday night. As it turned out, the last Sunday of Megan's life. Are you laughing yet?

The next day after school, Megan asked her mother -- Tina Meier restricted Megan's online access -- to log on the computer so Megan could check for new messages. What she found horrified her. Josh was still sending mean notes. And he had apparently been sharing her messages with others. Now the online community was abuzz with invective. Megan was fat. Megan was a slut.

Megan was destroyed. Especially after one last hateful message from Josh. You're a bad person, he said. Everybody hates you. The world would be better without you.

He got his wish just hours later. Megan Meier hanged herself that night.

Weeks later, her family got the punch line. There never was a Josh. He was a fiction, created by the parents, Curt and Lori Drew, of the girl who had once been Megan's friend. By . . . The . . . Parents.

People have threatened and harassed the Drews, and there are fears for their safety. No fears of prosecution, though; what they did broke no laws. But me, I don't want to hurt or jail them. I just want them to know how funny that joke was. How hee-fricking-larious.

No one wants acceptance quite as desperately as an adolescent girl who has never been the most popular, never been the prettiest. What brilliance, what comic genius, to take that vulnerability and use it against her.

So no, I don't want these folks hurt. I want them healthy. I want them long-lived. And I want them to be reminded, every day of their long, healthy lives, what a great joke they pulled.

They really paid Megan back. They really got her good.

This story gets more and more mind-blowing the more you read about it.

Here's the original news story:

http://stcharlesjournal.stltoday.com/news/sj2tn20071110-1111stc_pokin_1.ii1 .txt

All of the pertenent legal docs are at thesmokinggun. A mother in Virginia did some very basic research and found the name and address of the mother (if you can call her that) who created the fake myspace account and published it on the internet as much as she could. This was then met with people who actually think that nothing wrong was done and have started a campaign against "internet vigilantes" who then posted all of the information about the woman in Virginia.

Keep clicking on all the stories and blogs and such and you'll find this: http://meganhaditcoming.blogspot.com/

There are some seriously sick pockets of humanity in the world. Wow.

That is the reason why our kids (13 and 7) are only allowed on the web with our supervision. I know it sounds draconian, but my house, my rules. Surprisingly, they are so used to it they are okay with it. They both, much like this poor girl have a life ahead of them to make adult decisions like she made. As for the parents of the other girl - I would first remove the children from their home to social services, they have no right to raise children with the childish mentality they have. Then I might suggest witness protection because someone will take the law into there own hands at some point down the road! Just tragic!

Geeze man...I could not even read most of it...I can't believe how heartless some people can be. No those other parents did not MAKE her kill herself...but they knew she had issues and for some idiotic grown up to come up with an idea like this to torture a young girl is terrible.

No matter how cruel someone is now, there is always someone ready to take up for them.

I always say if Jesus Christ were to return to this current society, he would be treated even worse than the last time. Of course this is not intended to be an insult to the many folks that deny Jesus ever existed. It's just the way I look at it.

I don't think it's draconian at all. My daughter is only 4 and Lord knows where the internet will be by the time she's old enough to use it, which will be pretty quickly.

I've always looked at it this way - what if there was a library at the end of your block, and in that library, you could find everything that is good and bad about humanity. Would you let your child walk in alone?

You know, I actually do believe they did make her kill herself. There's not a parent or even adult around that doesn't know how painful, scary and hard it can be to be a teenager, and none of us had the internet to deal with. The anonymity of the internet may be its biggest curse - much, much easier to be a coward on the internet.

Heard this story on news then read more about the situation in a magazine. How heartbreaking for this young girl who was the victim here and for her family! And equally maddening to discover that the perpetrator of this prank was an 'adult' ... somebody elses parent. My kids are grown and out of the house now but if they were not they would probably be having a hard time with me because I would definitely be monitoring their internet usage. This is only one example of why. Hopefully, the parent who pushed this young lady over the edge will have more than a slap on the hand awaiting her. How can we expect responsibility out of our youth if we don't act accordingly?

My Sister is a school teacher........

she has had 2 students commit suicide in the last few years.

One was a girl who was overweight and picked on unmercifily...Kelly said she always treated the girl real nice...but that other students constantly picked on her.

The other was a young fellow...he just went home and hung himself...no one had any idea why.

I saw this on YouTube...about kids that died from being bullied it broke my heart.

Just look at the sweet young faces...it's so sad.

I read that article and saw something about it on television and it broke my heart. I had hoped the people could sue them for something if fo no other reason than to send a message. If not, and the shoe was on my foot....I'd burn the bastards' house down and never think twice....and then I'd probably make it my life's mission to make certain they were haunted by me every day thereafter. It's just so wrong...I know first hand the damage cruel children can do to another one! You ask where the parents are in all of this....and then you read this story and know.

How can this even be consider a "joke", even a twisted one?

Stories like this just blow my mind, how people can do this stuff to each other is so far beyond my comprehension...

The picture of Megan in the first post makes me think of my own daughters. I see a beautiful young lady there. How she saw herself was an entirely different matter, I suppose.

Kids are cruel, but I believe it is a learned behavior. Where do they learn it? Mostly from other kids, but maybe this was an extreme case of low self esteem? I don't know.

I remember liking a girl in 6th grade and being told she didn't like me because I was too fat. Yeah, it's heart breaking. I was an oversized kid until the age of 16, then I grew out of it. I remember the difference it made in girls noticing me, especially my older sister's friends. Those days are long gone...

I do know this. I am WAY over protective of my daughters. My oldest daughter gets her size from me. She's tall (5'10",) large framed and carries a little extra weight. When she was 12, she was 5'6" and weighed 150 pounds. Yes, she was a little self conscious. Thank GOD (literally) she didn't wind up with self esteem issues. I gave her the loving dad speech and told her that real beauty was inward. I did my best to assure her that the people who love her love her for who she is as a person, and not based on her outward appearance. (Giving kids that talk can be a double edged sword, as you might imagine.) And those of you who have met Laura know she is lovely, inward AND outward.

If something like this would have happened to her and MY family, I can tell you what would have happened. There'd be a few dead adults and I'd be incarcerated.

If this story is indeed TRUE, and not some trick of the web, then a million tears wouldn't be enough to wash away this vile deed.

There are levels of Hell that have never been written about in The Inferno that lust to be populated by those involved. They lovingly placing the noose around that child's neck. Evil.

If that means swearing to God to make those people's lives a living hell, guess that fits me, except for the Muslim part.

Hey Bother Dan !

It is indeed true.

I saw the parents on TV last week. The poor Mom looks as if she has been through living hell. Then I read more in People Magazine last night. It has broken my heart...knowing how that poor girl must have felt. She had emotional problems and the fools that did this to her knew it. She was getting herself back together and thought she had met the perfect boy. You know how young folks are. The other Mother pulled this stunt to see what was being said about her own Daughter.

I take great comfort in knowing that this young girl is sitting at the feet of the One who shall judge those responsible accordingly.

Come to think about it, God can handle this much better than I could. Those folks bought a heap of bad karma. No, on second thought...if it was my daughter, I'd still have to give God a hand.

But thank you piacere, that's a beautiful thought that the little girl is at peace now.
