Found this thread on another site, but thought it would work real good here.

http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?gmusi&1041658685&openfrom&a mp;1&4#1

Of course, my defintion of an "overall" guitarist may differ than others. To me, an "overall" guitarist is a guitarist that can do it all. There are many great "signature" guitar players, and they are ones that everbody knows, because they have a sound, tone, or whatever "signature" that everybody knows. The overall guitarist IMHO is the player who while they may have a "signature", they're not lock in by that "signature" and they can fit into many different musical situations.

Btw, here's a few "overall" guitarists that I enjoy:

Duane Allman
Danny Gatton
Warren Haynes
Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and Heartbreakers)
"Dangerous" Dan Toler
Jack Pearson

Living would be Haynes.

I would also include Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks.

Deceased would include Duane Allman, Jimmy Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I can think of only a couple guitarists I like . . .

.

. . . who've regularly worn overalls. Perhaps not coincidentally, Buddy's stopped with the overalls the last few years, and I finally saw him do a really bad show at his club last time.

If I only had to go with one and the qualifications are someone who can do it all - which is impossible in itself - but:

Mark Knopfler

He's played all sorts of styles and remains disctictive througout. He's a veritable song machine, writing pretty much everything Dire Straits did, and five or six releases in his solo career since (did you know he wrote Private Dancer for Tina?). He's scored movies (four to-date, I think). He's partnered with Clapton, Dylan, Atkins, Emmylou and many more. His own playing is uniquely identified, but very soulful and emotional. His performances are superb. I don't know anyone playing guitar who is as accomplished, balanced, and thoroughly enjoyable to see live.

Neil Young was once credited with being a great guitar player in an interview I heard years ago and he replied quite candidly, "Guitar player? My friend, there is Jimi Hendrix and there is everyone else, I'm not even in the same league!"

It brings up the story of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck catching Hendrix in that small pub in London back in the day and blown away.

For all that I love to hear, Hendrix is in his own catagory!

Don't forget Steve Gaines and Allen Collins.

As much as I'm loving Trower right now, it's still Rory On!

P.S. StratDalJr.'s favorite is Tommy Bolin.
