Over the Rhine's "The Darkest Night of the Year" has become one of my favorites:

I ordered The Staple Singers Christmas album( 25th Day of December) through Amazon this weekend ; it's a re-issue of their 1962 lp. So, I'm looking forward to listening to it soon.

I always pull this song out to remind everyone how lucky they are:

Gordon Lightfoot
"Circle of Steel"

Rows of lights in a circle of steel
Where you place your bets on a great big wheel
High windows flickering down through the snow
A time you know
Sights and sounds of the people going 'round
Everybody's in step with the season

A child is born to a welfare case
Where the rats run around like they own the place
The room is chilly, the building is old
That's how it goes
A doctor's found one his welfare rounds
And he comes and he leaves on the double

Deck The Halls was the song they played
In the flat next door where they shout all day
She tips her gin bottle back till it's gone
The child is strong
A week, a day, they will take it away
For they know about all her bad habits

Christmas dawns and the snow lets up
And the sun hits the handle of her heirloom cup
She hides her face in her hands for a while
Says look here child
Your father's pride was his means to provide
And he's serving three years for that reason

Rows of lights in a circle of steel
Where you place your bets on a great big wheel
High windows flickering down through the snow
A time you know
Sights and sounds of the people going 'round
Everybody's in step with the season

I love the old time crooners when it comes to Christmas music. Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra, Elvis and especially Burl Ives. These are the voices I grew up listening to at Christmas. I haven't started yet this year, but in about a week I will break out my Christmas CD collection. I also like the jazzy stuff like A Charlie Brown Christmas and the Glenn Miller Orchastra.

Donna just picked up a new Christmas compilation. One of the tracks is by King Curtis ... with a guest guitar player.

Plus there were a few Christmas albums with guitarists featured. The Merry AxeMas albums. I have two but there may be more.

Just saw them for the first time Wharfy and it was incredible how good the show was. People of all ages attending also. Funny to see an elderly woman smiling while some long hair is wailing away on guitar.

I got a hold of an original BEATLES CHRISTMAS ALBUM, which is a LP compilation of all their fan club Christmas messages. As the years progress, you can hear how the messages get more complex and trippy. They obviously put in a lot of effort in their messages. However by the end, they were recorded separately rather than together.

Lot's of Good Ones. Wish I could find that Chet Atkins one!

If you don't have it, you gotta get it: Chuck Leavell's Christmas CD

Also another good one is a compilation put together by good ole Rusty that I am proud to own.

I LOVE Christmas music!!! I have over 60 full length CDs-compilations, single artists, etc. I would have a hard time naming just 1 (or 5 for that matter) I personally don't care much for most of the stuff played on radio or in the malls. The old-school crooners are great in their own right, but don't do much for me at all. I'll have to look for that Chet Atkins, I'm not sure I've ever seen it before. I am fortunate to have a copied copy of Rusty's, it's very good! (thanks to Patrick Crenshaw) I also have a compilation that I've offered up as a BnP that last 2 years, you'll have to ask others how it is, I'm biased If you PM me I'll do a BnP for ya & you can decide yourself if it's any good

One last thing: BUY CHUCK LEAVELL's "WHAT'S IN THAT BAG?" it's great, he's a Brother & deserves our support!
